Do you think Toei will ever put older Sentai stuff on Blu-Ray?

By the way, how many disks will both Blu-Ray boxes contain?
2+1 both.
The "plus one" are bonus disks with old 3D movies.
They only have original movies there and no episodes-recut-for-theatre (DVD sets had all of them). Good riddance if you ask me.

A little note about the main topic.
I don't believe anything televised pre-Bouken will even see a Blu-ray release, that includes V Cinema. Theatrical films are obvious exception as they were obviously shot on better film and whatnot. But TV stuff... Judging from the DVDs, the level of detail that could warrant a blu-ray release is simply not there. Sure they could rescan the film, but it wouldn't bring much improvement, since what exists is already struggling for details. Moreover, it should be noted that while JAKQ ~ Ohranger (sans Jetman) were rescanned from film for DVD, Goranger, Jetman, Car~Time and all V Cinemas up to Gao vs SS were not. What this means is that Toei used old analog telecine transfer. Aside from Goranger which simply looks blurry, it means trouble in form of field blending, bad coloring and slight lack of details in comparison with new rescans of old episodes (let alone digitally produced stuff). Since the line of remastering randomly breaks with Jetman and from ep6 of Carranger on, I suppose the reason for that is Toei simply lost the original film. So, no HD there, ever.

Well, it's still better than Doctor Who situation!

Wait, wait, wait, wait! Gokaiger is going to be the first Sentai released on Blu-Ray? How is that even possible? I'm really confused. Please enlighten me...
Same here, Last time i checked Goseiger's movie was on blue ray i don't know about the series itself though.

That's right, two Goseiger movies are on blu-rays, but as far as TV series go, Gokaiger is the first one.

Kamen Rider = 2 discs, plus a 3D blu-ray for Kamen Rider: Run All Over the World and Kamen Rider World

Super Sentai = 3 discs, plus a 3D blu-ray for Super Sentai World and Toei Hero Daishugō (a crossover of Tokusou Robo Janperson and Blue Swat)

From what I read, the 3D discs can be played on a regular Blu-Ray player, so you only lose the 3D the four shorts had.

Goranger and Jetman were, I think, the first old Sentai to get series DVD releases after Gogo V. Toei may've not decided to rescan the film until after these series got released and deciding to rescan after seeing the results, gotten feedback on Goranger and Jetman. I'm sure they'll rescan the film for HD/Blu-Ray releases.

As for Gogo V and the Sentai of Car through Time and also including Gao to Magi, those shows were very likely finished on tape. In that case, an HD version would require them to rescan the film and re-edit it to conform to the original SD versions. They didn't do that for the DVDs because, while it would've made the DVDs look better, it wouldn't have been worth it from one SD source to another. For an HD transfer, I'm sure Toei would then do all the work necessary to make them HD ready. For the effects, they can re-composite the filmed elements (mecha and actors against blue/green screen) and redo the CG elements. For those now going "Oop, forget it if they have to redo CG" I direct you to the episodes of Gokaiger that have featured past Sentai warriors. The recreated Henshin sequences the Gokaiger use are so spot on, Toei could reuse them to do HD versions of the episodes. You go "Okay, Monkey, but what about the CG mecha?" All I can say...well, they don't exactly have that much to do. Most of it is used a million times after its introduction, so they only need to redo it once and just reuse it when needed.

As for the uptick in detail, I remembered seeing Wizard of Oz on the special DVD and thinking "Dang, they can't top this". Well, got the Blu-Ray and it beat the DVD. The movie box set should be a good indicator of how the series will look since, in my opinion, the movies on this set are not that different from the shows they're a part of (not meant as a insult). Either way, movies and shows have a way of surprising me and looking better on Blu-Ray. If they release the series on Blu-Ray and not just upconvert the SD tapes, the Blu-Rays should look magnificent, or at least pretty darn good. :)

That's pretty much a guessing game we're playing here, but Kakuranger and Ohranger already have things that were clearly done on video - yet - are still remastered. I'm refering to CG special effects... they stand out pretty obviously.

Not exactly. Old ones were published in that order: Goranger (not remastered), JAKQ (is remastered), GoGoFive (not), Denji (is), Time (not), Sun (is), Jet (not), Ginga (not), Mega (not), Car (partially), Bioman (is) and so is everything from there on.

And from what I've heard, Japan really, really hates when things are being redrawn like that.

So it'll be the new 3D's not the old school 3D with the cardboard specs?.

I believe new 3D, as in using the new 3D TVs and glasses and not the red and green ones.

I don't know then. You're right, I was guessing. However, there is the fact that both the original Star Trek, Ultra Q, and Kamen Rider still had their film to make HD version (I heard a rumor a while back about the Kamen Rider series getting remastered in HD and Star Trek and Ultra Q got/are getting Blu releases). If those still have their film, the odds are good for Sentai.

Found a review for the Kamen Rider movie set, from CDJapan:

A great dose of classic Rider action. 5
A very entertaining collection but probably not unless you're a fan of older tokusatsu. This boxset includes all of the Kamen Rider movies that were produced specifically for theaters in the '70s and '80s (meaning it doesn't include any of the TV episodes that were shown in theaters such as the Amazon movie). Most of the movies featured play out like a normal TV episode plot (albeit with Rider team-ups) but some have a little larger scope to them such as the 5 Riders, 8 Riders and Super-1 movies (which is the length of two episodes). If I had to pick a favorite of these it would probably be 8 Riders but the start of the climatic battle in Super-1 was very much a "yay!" moment (don't want to spoil it if you haven't seen it). And if you're looking for action then the final two movies, the ones based on BLACK, definitely deliver and are quite enjoyable. Quality-wise the movies look great. They do show their age but still look fantastic considering. You can still see film grain (which I think is a good thing) but dirt and debris on the film is almost gone. The scenes recycled from the TV show don't fare as well (which may be why the movies that are blown-up versions of the episodes aren't featured here) but those are few and mostly the opening credits to some of the movies. Scenes that take advantage of Japan's beautiful landscapes look the best in HD. The Rider costumes also benefit from the bump up to HD. The movies, expectedly, look better and better as you get to the end of the collection with the newer movies. Overall, I highly recommend this as long as you are a fan of older Riders (or older toku in general) and aren't expecting these Blu-rays to look like pristine, polished, brand-new productions.

The bonus disc includes two 3D features which are also available to view in 2D as well as trailers (which plays like one 6-minute action montage). I don't have a 3D-capable display but I can tell you these mini-movies are fun and have lots of jump-at-the-screen moments so looking forward to rewatching them when I do have a 3D TV.

Makes me hopeful for Sentai's collection. Granted, the comments about the series stock footage makes me uncertain on Sentai and Rider series Blu, but I'll also counter that the movies were mixing the films' original negatives with second generation prints of the series' stuff. Just another theory.

Also, remember when I said Boukenger, Gekiranger, and possibly Go-onger may've been finish in 720p due to what they're Wiki pages said about being shown in 720p? Well, I was goofing on Wikipedia when I went to Kamen Rider OOO's page. It said that it, too, is broadcast in 720p, as were the Rider shows since Kabuto. The Blu-Rays, however, clearly say 1080p, meaning TV Asahi is just downgrading the show to fit the channel.

While it could mean nothing in terms of Blu-Rays for Rider or Sentai, it betters the odds that Bouken-Geki were finished in 1080p and just shown in 720p. Could go either way still, but it's better than nothing. :)
