Lucas is smart for letting the franchise out of his hands. Can you imagine the kind of legal fiasco there would be if he just happened to die one day? Without the franchise being secured somewhere else?
I've been thinking about all of this since yesterday and I really have to know ... Do people actually get excited for new Star Wars stuff anymore? It's weird, because the more and more I think about the Disney/Lucasfilm news, the more I've realized that I don't really care. Is there really even anything special about Star Wars anymore?
It was one thing, back in the day, when the first Timothy Zahn book was released (basically the beginning of what would become the EU). That was HUGE. Star Wars hadn't really had any presence in years. Today ... Star Wars is just everywhere, constantly. Cartoons, books, toys, candies, underpants ... continuously by the truckload. Is there really any magic left?
We could say the same about Batman,Superman, Power Rangers,Spider-Man, Kamen Rider in Japan,Star Trek, X-Men or any franchise really.
If you like any of these series, it's only proof that your statment that the magic is gone is wrong.
The proper question would be if what makes the saga relevant to today's world. When Star Wars first came on the scene, science fiction wasn't really accepted and was in the fringes of society and only children really enjoyed openly.
Then when the prequel trilogy came about, the situation was more favorable and there was a flood of merchandise. That series failed in some aspects to maintain the quality of the original trilogy alongside any other changes, but it kept the series alive. The Clone Wars are a part of this era.
Now with 2015 on its way, Episode 7 will be something to really be interested in. Again, while the series has only had some forms of newer media, none of it exactly stuck because it wasn't on the silver or small screen.
I'm seeing the series will come back in a huge way with both a television series on ABC and a film series 2015 on.
