That has changed sorta. I mean, yeah, the main movie characters and their kids still get a bulk of the focus, but they aren't the only characters now that have their own books. There's Darth Bane, that's an Old Republic set book series, there's an actual Old Republic series, and it's a pretty awesome one at that, then you have stand alones like Knight Errant and the Darth Plagueis novel.
I've actually never been a fan of the movie characters in book form, so that's why I branched out and took the longest time to get into the books. (and why the only books in my collection that follow those guys are Fate of the Jedi and Legacy of the Force, well, and Death Troopers, that book's amazing) My first book was the original Darth Bane novel and I loved it because you're given this really cool look at a character that was only really mentioned elsewhere. What I really loved about the first Bane book is seeing the evolution of a dude go from someone who isn't really evil, just someone who has had a hard life, to being the man who created the modern Sith "rule of two".
I think you'll always have the Skywalker and Solo families as leads in a good chunk of the fiction, but more and more recently the books have started to explore these other areas.
