Could Sentai work without the Red Ranger?

Doesn't Kakuranger qualify as a Sentai where Red was that much of a leader? Don't quote me, I haven't seen it.

He was still the main character, and the story mostly focused on his perspective. But White was the team leader, the others (including Red) obeyed her, and she drove a large part of the plot. Over the series Red got more development, he became less childish and more determined, and was her second in command. I'd like to see a Sentai like that again
Same thing for Megaranger. Red's still a member, but Black is the actual Team leader. So, yeah, that would be cool. Oh and let's not forget about Gaoranger. Yellow was the acting team leader before Red came to the frame and in Gekiranger, Red may have had some focus parts, but Yellow was considered to be the leader of the team.

It doesn't matter about the color. They need a leader. Now can any team function without a leader? No. Most of Sentai's leaders just happen to be Red, It's iconic.

So No they can't in reality, but technically they can, it just doesn't have to be the color Red.

Agreed.

I'll agree Ken but, I liked Gou. :/

I like Gou, he just didn't do a lot and did not have a purpose in the overall plot. He'd have worked equally well as a character in just one or two episodes, to resolve Retsu's character arc about wanting to find out what had happened to Gou.

With regards to Magiranger, while I will agree that there was a definite focus on Kai before anyone else, I would have to say that it didn't choke out focus on the other characters or that it made the story all about him with the rest of his family as taggers-on to it. Consider the rescue of Miyuki from Hades God Toad's imprisonment; a hugely important plot point, the culmination of what I'd say was the primary plot thread of the Hades God arc...and this was focused on Urara and Tsubasa. Their story, Kai was a supporting character in that. Then there's the whole thing where Titan turns good and everyone's trying to get him to the Lake of Slumber so that N Ma can't be reborn, and that was a Houka and Makito storyline, with some important work by Miyuki and Isamu in a B-plot that connects at the very end. And right after that was Urara and Hikaru confessing their love to one another and getting married, and if that's not important to the plot, I don't know what is! This sort of thing characterized the whole run of Magiranger to me, so while there is a definite red focus, it didn't hurt the show. At least not for me at any rate.

No, it's not important. It's basically just viewer fanservice. The plot would've gone on with or without a wedding

Magiranger pushes the Red pretty aggressively, but it's not as bad as some series where there literally would be no story if not for Red (again, Gekiranger and Shinkenger are the most prominent examples)

The concept of no red wouldn't work because he is like the main star of the show the icon, it just wouldn't be right, its like asking would Dr.who work without the Tardis?

That's not quite the same. The TARDIS is part of the plot, it is how the Doctor travels through time and space. Doctor Who with no TARDIS would be like Sentai with no morphers or mecha. Sentai with no Red would be Doctor Who with no companion? Something important but not necessary?

Red is just a color. Again, it has been the norm to make the main character have the color red because it was proven in a study that most children are more attracted to that color than any other, and since this is a kid's show, it makes sense to make the lead character have red, even if the red is not the leader like in the case of Magirangers. A show without red would always work (Most KR shows, MH, etc.), but again, since it was already set as a tradition with Sentai, then it would look really silly to not have one.

I concur. It never bother me, unlike a certain PR incarnation in which I won't name its title.

True, but there were other parts in which it focused more on the importance of a family which turned Ozu-kun into more of a supporting character. Examples: Makito and Houka helping Titan get to the lake of slumber, Hikaru-sensei and Urara's marriage, Tsubasa protecting Rin's Ghost from the one Hades Beast, whose name I forgot, and the episode where the Ozu siblings fought Toad to rescue their mother, Miyuki-san. But, yeah. I get what you're saying.

removing Red from Sentai is just like asking New York to get rid of the Statue of Liberty or asking China to break down the Great Wall. you get my drift?
