Captain Shark Reviews Gorenger and Beyond!

Dekaranger vs. Abaranger:

Kruger tells the Dekarangers of an incident they head over to. A building has an explosion on an upper part. When the Dekarangers arrive they find the three main Abarangers on a rampage so they transform. The Abarangers in Abare Mode look around before the Dekarangers charge in. Fighting ensues with three two against ones. The trio fend off the cops until they are beaten down. A crow appears, the Abarangers seem interested, and they steal a Dekaranger car to pursue. Aba Yellow drives off a ramp truck to gain way too much sky while Aba Red and Blue shoot. Their luck runs out as they bounce off a stadium and land, the car being perfectly intact! I'll assume it was the tires. The Abarangers are arrested by the Dekarangers just before the title shows. Deka Blue goes over their names, Green makes fun of them, Red likes their Dino Braces. Deka Yellow touches Aba Red's hands to scan memories, confirming their truth- AND SHE DOES THE ENDING THEME SONG. Kruger wants them escorted to the control room. Why? That crow turned into a humanoid named Kazack. This guy is a mafia member who will be next in line to lead. Kruger wonders how the Abarangers knew of him before they did, Aba Yellow replies that one of their friends told them, likely after a curry shop owner. DekaRed bickers with Aba Red for no reason, likely all his yelling. Aba Blue does chiropracting on Kruger which makes him act like more of a dog than usual. Aba Yellow pokes around Swan's lab against her will followed by shenanigans with Murphy. Kruger has both reds go off. Meanwhile, a new trinoid appears, Ambrella revealing Mikela feared his great power so he was locked away (he was in a jewel Kazck stole). The trinoid, Saunaginnan, is said to be the strongest while Kazack threatens to break Ambrella if there is a double cross. The bat alien even looks at an Abaranger magazine to comment on goofy trinoids. Apparently what makes this once special is necromancy as he revives Succubus and Jenio! He tries reviving more, but since the jewels in his shoulders are busted he cannot do more. Kazack sends the two revived alienizers to replace them. After that the reds head to a huge museum where the curry folks from Abaranger are- Oh hey croc face is back and he kissed Deka Red! Aba Red introduces him- Wait, he's the company president!? Anyway, he has Saunaginnan's missing jewel as a memento (so he says). More comedy ensues that goes nowhere when Kazack appears, his disguise being carpet. The reds are beaten up followed by Kazack chasing down the rogue trinoid only for the two to follow. Aba Red heads off to call someone, forcing Deka Red to fight alone. Why? Mai is in Hollywood! Kazack takes the jewel back, saying Dezmo is coming back to life. Aba Red tells Deka Red there which does make sense with him being space at the time so good continuity. Saunaginnan takes his body parts and runs. The alienizer teleports and Deka Red throws a fit. Kruger calls up saying they need to divide into teams because mayhem. Deka Blue, Deka Green, and Deka Break fight Jenio, but Aba Blue thinks that is a bad idea because of intuition. When they attack, the torso mirrors are reinforced, proving AkibaRed's theory wrong about how revived monsters are weaker. Deka Yellow and Deka Pink fight Succubus to no avail. Aba Yellow helps them out, suggesting they transform only for their devices to get goo spit. Succubus teleports off and Aba Yellow gets an idea which involves stripping. After that, Succubus comes to a river where the three women pop out of the waters in kimonos and umbrellas- When did they get mecha tatooes- ARE THOSE MAC 11s!? Gotta say, good choice in guns!

Aba Yellow has a bunch of chemicals which undoes the goo spit so they can transform. Kazack is confronted by the reds again who bicker. Anaroids are unleashed to be taken out. Deka Red punches Aba Red who punches him back as they keep fighting. Airy words fly, the villains wonder what is going on, Kazack fires eye lasers, and jumps in for throwing attacks. Aba Blue feels Jenio for a weak spot, revealing it is in his back. The four charge in, Break landing a blow followed by them shooting, Jenio soon exploding like glass. Succubus falls from a shooting barrage right after. Both reds are hanging from a rooftop, Kazack does hand stomping telling them to rot in hell. Deka Red shoots him and Aba Red throws him up so he can roll in. Kazack brags about being stronger- where did he get that katana from? Black shows up doing his Kikaider impression and POed he must leave his home for peace once more. He transforms and goes slash happy. The reds join him in his assault, going down to ground leve as Kazack reveals he has a gem that absorbed the damage for him before teleporting off. Aba Red wonders how Black got to their world and it turns out Black's daughter had a little of Riji's power left over. Cut to Saunaginnan having the anaroids.... Cooking coal? Left over jewel shards used for reviving Jenio and Succubus emit energy beams that empower him again. Around the world mysterious fog encompasses.... The world. Both sentai teams make it to Saunaginnan's cave hideout when an eruption occurs. Out from it are Kazack and alienizers previously slain. Kazack sicks them along with anaroids and weird dark sky filter aside this fight is neat. Num-O suddenly appears and attacks Deka Red- Oh it was Kazack. SUDDENLY HURRICANE RED SHOWS UP- Oh it was Kazack, but hey more continuity nods are fine- except the last one was non-canon AAAAAAAAGH! Explosions happen, a portal opens up to the Underworld, Dezmo tries reviving, and out of it is Top Galer! Killer teleports in since he is half of Dezmo/the strongest evolian. Kruger shows up to help as the heroes all transform and do intros complete with one back explosion. Some talking happens before more fighting, this time without the dark sky filter because why be consistent? Seriously though, good fight scene. Deka Red then has judgment to delete Kazack and Saunaginnan. Murphy's keye bone is thrown so he becomes the D-Bazooka while the Super Dino Bomber forms. Both fire, Saunaginnan blowing up while Kazack escapes into a mech. Saunaginnan Grows because obviously, Deka Red has Swan call the Deka Machines out for Dekaranger Robo and DekaBike to be used. A two against two fight breaks out while Top Galer has Killer merge with him. Other bakuryus show up from within Brachiosaurs, allowing Killer AbaRenOh to form. Super Dekaranger Robo forms during this. Pink feels bad Killer will die again once Saunaginnan is terminated. A two on two fight breaks out between the giants, the villains quickly lose to them. The Gatling Punch is used for Killer AbaRenOh to destroy bother titans in one hit. On the beach Killer bids his farewell while asking Black to give his daughter his regards. The narrator mentions how both teams have the same heart and hopes the Dekarangers will do their best. At DekaBase a party is thrown with all sorts of silliness with trinoid music and the mentors getting along. Also Black's family and Emmy show up from nowhere. The movie ends with everyone taking a picture.

Kazack: Powers inlcude shapeshifting, high jumping, hand electric bolts, teleportation, consuming life energy, eye lasers, and a katana
Saunaginnan: His only known power is reviving lasers from the right hand
PalletteView: Powers include burrowing and a head gun

So yeah, this was in canon with the main continuity. It felt like a less stupid version of Abaranger vs. Hurricanger, but still had the reds bickering which really did not needed to be in there. The humor could have been better, but at least it was reasonable. Probably the main drawback was the final battle because it was over almost instantly once the kaiju portion occurred, normally that portion of the fight is longer and so far this is the longest versus movie.

10 Years After:

Some alien runs from a guy in a heavy coat. SPD shows up, the guy in the coat revealing to be a batsroid with anaroids showing up to help. A human-like alien jumps from the alien and into Pink via wormholes. The bots blast Green and Pink and the human alien girl is forced out. Yellow shoots down the grunts as she and Red jump down in SWAT Mode. The batsroid is fought as Green and Pink tell mystery girl they are co-workers. Que the intro. Once the batsroid is destroyed, Red and Yellow are revealed to be different people. Mystery girl thinks about some guy haunting her and wants to be taken to their base, Neo Deka Base. The narrator mentions that after the last episode everything moved underground. Once there, Break talks to her and since she knows him she wants to talk to him. Blue appears near Green and Pink, feeling very down as it is mentioned he has just been playing video games lately. Pink thinks he changed while Green mentions the Yellow we know got married. A cop car arrives, the driver revealing to be Red after he did Fire Squad training. Blue walks in not so excited. Break reveals he called Red and we find out mystery girl is named Carrie. The Case? Kruger is working with a criminal and killed some people which shocks them, currently he remains in a hospital after being shot. Also the original Yellow snuck in somehow. Red thinks Kruger might be innocent despite chances being near zero. After that Yellow and her husband talk about whatever as the narrator notes her husband was some boy she rescued in the series. She notices Pink spying on them so she invites her co-worker in for talking. Red pops in for no reason. Pink ends it saying she hates everyone. After that at New DekaBase, Red and Blue talk about the latter's problem. Pink is in a bathtub hugging Murphy while crying when Green asks if she is okay. Talking ensues for a while until the galactic police director, Kight Reidich, calls Break to tell him to return Red now. This happens much to the shock of everyone and in a flashback Red refuses, the reason being they need to question people close to Kruger. Break mentions Carrie can end this case and assigns teams. Blue finally bothers to button up his uniform as he walks in. A shuttle takes the Dekarangers through space to the Cosmic Supreme Court aka where deletion judgments are done. Also what is ten seconds on Earth is eight months to them. Pink worries about Carrie and proposes singing. An enemy suddenly attacks. Break notices something is off with his cup when the original Yellow comes into his office followed by Swan. Meanwhile, the others crash on a wasteland planet, evacuate, and are attacked by mecha humans lead by an iganoid. The Dekarangers transform, Pink protects Carrie while the others fight grunts. Carrie reveals she can only enter a body to hide their once per person, forcing her and Pink to flee. Blue chases after something during the fight and Green hand stands while fighting the iganoid. Green runs off after coming to a conclusion, chasing after Blue who heads to the enemy ship while the others finish fighting. Pink complains just as Blue and Green fly off and she tries jumping aboard.

Kight contacts Break what is going on while Pink explores the ship, seeing New Red and New Yellow are roughhousing Carrie while revealing they are not really cops. They throw her in a closet while an iganoid tries killing Kruger. Yellow saves him while he is in a coma, knowing her boss is being framed. Swan uses her licensed to scan Kruger, revealing he has been poisoned while Yellow fights the iganoid. During this Blue and Green banter on the ship like bros. Pink tries freeing Carrie and fights out the cuffs are not SPD. She tells her about how good her squad is complete with one sentence descriptions of everyone. Carrie thinks Green is her boyfriend because reasons. They land at planet Hygold and head to a warehouse. The guy that haunted Carrie was none other than Kight who laughs maniacally. Carrie is uncuffed and sent to him. Kight thinks she can die or not head to court. She asks how he did all this when Pink comes in guns blazing. New Red almost shoots her, disarming her followed by Kight smacking her. Kight orders her death when Carrie uses a night stick and laser pistol to fend them off. Blue contacts them, revealing the real Carrie was in his body to nobody's notice. Yellow contacts Pink that Kruger is awake. Also the Carrie Pink was with was really Red in disguise using mirage technology upgraded by Swan. The villains shoot at them and make a run for it only for Blue, Green, and Yellow to show up. Also Yellow learned the ability to teleport because her husband and son can do that too and that's an esper trick. Also Red unintentionally told her everything via touch. Pink calls Red amazing and Yellow reveals the video evidence was faked. Swan did some examining, revealing it was Kight in disguise. Red reveals Carrie saw the whole thing what with Kight doing back ally deals and Kruger catching him. Carrie's dad was used as a hostage so Kruger could be shot, Tight took Vega, and used the Mirage Dimension to frame him for killing everyone in the room. Carrie used her dad's body to hide in and escaped when Kruger told her to run despite her sorrow. Kight's reason for the crimes? Money! Suddenly a giant clone of Ambrella is summoned! He vows to crusht he Dekarangers when Dekaranger Robo on DekaBike shows up piloted by Break. Clone Ambrella fires up palm lasers to no avail before melee combat ensues, destroying the giant after a short speech. Not sure why Break says "Strike Out". Kight gets Neo Alpha Muscle Gear on, Yellow destroys continuity after saying this is their first transformation together in ten years, they transform, and Red gets spiffy armor as they jump on a rooftop to do intros and poses. After that they jump down to fight as the opening theme plays, three two against one fights happen. Kight then absorbs his two minions to body laser spam and give him super speed. However, they refuse to give up just as Kruger saves them using Vega. He throws it to Red just before collapsing. Red manages to hold his own before destroying the muscle gear followed by judging him, the verdict being deletion. Pink throws the key bone so Murphy can become the D-Bazooka and the fire balls stun him long enough for Break to punch and Red to slash. Kight curses the Dekarangers before exploding. The Dekarangers say goodbye to Carrie and Kruger admits he loves Swan because why not appeal to shippers? She says the same thing and they hug. The opening theme plays as the Dekarangers act all happy, laughing it up. The end credits play, Red has to go back to work so he says farewell to his teammates, saying they will always be together at heart. This takes quite the bit of time to accomplish as it takes up the entire end credits- Oh Blue had to say he was not his partner one last time.

This could have been in the main continuity, but Yellow just had to add that one line. Anyway, this was slightly more boring than the Hurricanger 10 Years After movie, but at the same time had better writing minus the random Ambrella clone. It was fine overall. Lets hope the Gavan crossover is not out of continuity either, that would be a colossal drag.

Now we have come to the final sentai released on VHS which others know as Magiranger.

MF_Rangers.jpg

"Still another two parter?"

Correct!

"I miss old reviews oh boo hoo!"

Say something!

"Anything else about this we should know?"

Magiranger started this idea with western fans about good-bad series alternating every year, this being the first while Boukenger would be a bad series and it would jump back and fourth between good and bad until Ninnninger was also a bad followed by ZyuOhger which according to /m/ is also a bad. However, the same western fandom holds Liveman, Jetman, and Dairanger on pedestals they do not deserve to be on so chances are we're busting myths from here on out!

"But aren't you gonna stop at Gokaiger?"

I want to make it at least as far as Go-Busters, maybe Kyoryuger.

"You've been watching sentai non-stop lately, Captain Shark. Maybe you need a rest."

I do, but I will save that when we get to finishing Boukenger.

"Seriously dude, take a break. This is worrying."

I can't stop! But what the hell, since Boukenger is an anniversary series and splitting up posts would slow me down for a while how about a straw poll! Deadline is the morning of the 17th which is one day from now! Either we'll keep doing half reviews or go back to episode guides for anniversary series.... Meaning I would have to do one for Zyuohger if I ever get that far.... Ugh.

http://www.strawpoll.me/12309912

"Still TV-Nihon?"

Yup.

"And movies?"

Since the main movie is between eps 25 and 29 that will be at the beginning of part two while Magiranger vs. Dekaranger will come last.

Dekaranger was inconsistent with being widescreen while this one not so much, kind of irritating as I type stuff down on notepad while watching on KissAsian.... Untiil ep 11 when it is suddenly full screen again, what the hell? I know sentai writers these days have anime as their previous background and this is the first series where it shows. It felt very much like early and mid 00s anime, especially Nanoha but with out the pedophile appeal. The zobils are similar to 80s sentai troops what with their faces being cut to reveal interiors and gross organic components. Then there is the ending theme and WHOLE CRAP THAT IS CHILDISH. Branken was a typical strong and ruthless sword swinger while Wolzard is a more honorable version.... And that honor is very inconsistent with the Infershia's goal of killing all humans and taking over the world. It's probably the only major problem I have with the villains. Meemy is a good replacement for Branken and not a carbon copy, using more cunning tactics than brute strength; he kind of reminds me of Zuril from Grendizer. Vanculia is a cruel field commander with body splitting not unlike the Twins from Hellraiser 4: Bloodline, maybe it's a homage to Kellar and Mirror from Denziman (Red swipes his boxing gloves similar to Denzi Red so it is possible). Enma I'll wait to comment on until the end. As for ranger balance Red has two too many while everyone else is even; notably Pink and Yellow tend to share their focus eps with others, weird. Shine did not have a proper focus ep thus far and since he is more of a proper mentor that makes sense. I noticed that Shine and Mandora Boy are like the super serious and cutesy mentors from previous entries, probably combining them. Also Shine follows the last two series in that the mentor is also a ranger, while Aba Black was more ranger and Kruger was more mentor, Shine is a balance between them. Toei editing seems minimal and what few instances it has can be blamed on magic for once.

With all that said, serious chance this will make top 3, not even kidding. I dare say this entry has the best costumes in the entire franchise, only the likes of Bioman, Flashman, Turboranger, Zyuranger, Ohranger, Carranger, GoGo-V, Timeranger, and Dekaranger can compete.... And I just realized only Boukenger and Go-Busters has a similar look after this point, but maybe Kyoryuger and Kyuranger will wow me by then.

WOW! HOW MAGICAL! I mean yeah, Red got an episode too many (and maybe Blue, but considering one of her eps focused much more on Smoky I won't count it as one of her's) compared to everyone else, but hot dog! The action was awesome! The writing was awesome! The pacing was awesome! The effects were awesome! The ending was awesome! The music was awesome! (the ending theme grew on me) The monsters were awesome! The final boss was awesome! What few flaws this had were grossly outmatched and outperformed and easily forgiven and yippy skippy! BEST! SENTAI! EVER! Even the movie is the best in the franchise! I dare say this rivals even Ultraman Dyna and Kamen Rider Drive as best toku of all time! Time for rankings!

Magiranger vs. Dekaranger will be next before we head into Boukenger.

Magiranger vs. Dekaranger:

October 2005, the Magirangers eat out at a fancy restaurant celebrating ten years of a special day. MagiPink gets out a broach her mom wore for the occasion. They begin to eat when an Earthquake shakes the restaurant. MagiGreen thinks it's Infershia as we see a giant monster lifting the building while on a rampage. One of the customers takes off her disguise to reveal she is DekaPink! Insert the intro here- Wow DekaYellow got a weird haircut. Very different from different team up movies. Kruger tells his subordinates the monster is Builjick, wanted for kidnapping. The Dekarangers race over while bantering, paramedics arriving first. DekaGreen contacts DekaPink as she scolds them for taking so long. Builjick opens his mouth, scaring everyone while DekaPink transforms to shoot the monster's feet. DekaGreen restrains him via giant cuffs and DekaYellow shines lights while Break catchs the building. DekaBlue manages to handcuff him, saving the day. Nearby, a guy named Babon is contacted on his phone by a guy named Agent X. They are proceeding with a plain while DekaPink grapples with DekaGreen. Babon uses a laser machine gun to blow up Builjick. He then attacks the Dekarangers and reflects their shots when the Magirangers show up to fight. Babon is easily assaulted, Shine mentions his chest absorbs attacks so beams should not be used. Pink transforms into a cannon and launches at Babon when someone gets in the way. That someone? DekaRed! He uses a beam despite being told not to and tries deleting him, seemingly execute the alienizer with the Fire Squad's new Battlizer- Oh it also turns into Murphy! DekaPink missed him before they try mentioning beams were a bad idea. Babon gets up and fires on them before taking MagiBlue hostage. DekaYellow goes after them ust before teleporting. MagiRed fights DekaRed in a fit of rage before their teams back them off. Break and Shine agree to team up with the kidnappings. The Dekarangers are taken to the magic room while Kruger tells the others Agent X is behind this. DekaRed explains Agent X is responsible for many crimes including the kidnapping of his teacher. Agent X contacts them via magiphone, telling them to come to the Flowers of Heaven. He wants an exchange for someone in a prison in one hour. Cut to MagiBlue chained up in a cage, Agent X is revealed to be an hades beastman named Aboloth which Vancuria points out he became an alienizer. She shows up with Meemy as Aboloth brags about how awesome he is. DekaYellow shows up in SWAT mode to shoot them up, but Aboloth quickly takes her down. She tries reading her minds and ends up horrified. Meanwhile, everyone else tries doing a plan, the reds still get angry at each other. Swan shows up to help them. Apparently their mom knew Swan and told them the broach was used to fight evil and can freeze love. Every ten years the stone must have lots of love to be controlled so she asks the Dekarangers to assist in the back up. Swan asked when as the flashback ends. The broach itself was the Flower of Heaven. Sentimental music plays as MagiYellow picks up a family photo. The reds bicker again, DekaBlue thinks they should look outside their specialties. DekaGreen gets into his thinking pose when he comees up with the idea Babon likes tall girls. Break gets a bad feeling as DekaGreen gets an idea for Shine. A zobile taunts MagiBlue and DekaYellow, both chained up until the former kicks him in the balls. The two yammer about whatever until Babon shows up. Travelion takes them to an island with Shine and Break wearing drag while Smoky is grossed out. Both greens scout the island's shores while talking about why they fight the Infershia. SAD MUSIC OH BOO HOO! The pinks do the same thing in the jungle. The others walk around the jungle to climb rocks, the reds bonding slowly.

Babon teleports with both hostages as Break and Shine show up in drag with the Flower of Heaven. They take off their coats dramatically which Babon really seems to like, DekaYellow even breaks the fourth wall. Babon is distracted while everyone else attempts a rescue mission until the wigs come off. He asks what is up before all twelve run off. Babon somehow gets the Flower of Heaven and the reds retaliate to take it back. Aboloth teleports in to attack. DekaRed reaches for his locket which MagiRed takes and reveals it is the family of the boy he was unable to save in the series. They hide behind a rock, DekaRed saying he fights for a family he could not save, MagiRed wonders what is up as I wonder what the other ten rangers are doing. Aboloth attacks them and takes the broach and fires an electric bolt from his sword, but Kruger shows up to save the reds just in time. He turns into DekaMaster while Wolzard shows up to make things worse. Aboloth and Babon escape on the AbreTrailer. The others chase after while DekaMaster fights Wolzard, both moving at superhuman speeds. Both use their final attacks, neither gaining an advantage as the island starts to blow up. Wolzard teleports away as DekaMaster escapes. AbreTrailer turns into AbreTrex, a giant robot powered by the Flower of Heaven. DekaYellow tells the others he is trying to turn Earth into a wasteland hell. The Magirangers demand they help out for the sake of the galaxy and their family, the Dekarangers decline at first until DekaRed decides why not. All twleve transform at once. As Aboloth states Ambrella was his master, DekaWing appears in cannon form and fired by MagiLegend- AAAAAAND this cannot be in continuity! Abretrex crashes to Earth with MagiKing, Travelion, DekaBike, and Dekaranger Robo fighting four against one. A combination beam called Grand Nova destroys Abretrex, forcing the two out. The rangers follow on a cliffside to do intros. Neat back explosions. Aboloth summons zobils and Vancuria shows up to fight. Fights occur as the Dekaranger opening play. So cool. Break and Shine fight Babon, the latter having a plan. This involves putting Break into Smoky's lamp, charging it up, and firing the ranger so he can do rapid punches. All the female rangers fight Vancuria in a pocket dimension while switching outfits with the female Dekarangers. The sisters do the same thing which gets so stupid they break the fourth wall. Vancuria then lands in a bathtub as the four women combine their weapons and send her off via magic tornado.... Yeah. MagiRed reuses his trapeze spell as the Magiranger opening plays, allowing DekaRed to gain more aerial coverage. The assaults continue as MagiRed goes into legendary mode and DekaRed has Murphy turned into his battlizer. They charge and jump, turning into a phoenix that rams into Aboloth so they can take back the broach. After that MagiRed turns into his regular form, the Flower of Heaven glows as it turns into the Blizzard of Light. It turns into magic that enhances all the weapons, firing into a combination attack called the Strike Out that terminates both villains in a fiery explosion. Everyone celebrates at the magic room, the reds look at pictures of their loved ones- Wait, DekaRed has a thing with Bright? MagiYellow and DekaBlue shove them down for being goofs as comedic chaos ensues. After some bantering and whatnot, the Flower of Heaven turns into white flowers for all fourteen of them, Swan saying this is the flower of happiness. A glass wind up trinket suddenly plays as the room dims and the credits roll. The movie ends with everyone holding up their flowers and smiling.

Builjick: Powers include eye energy bolts and teleporting what he eats
Babon: Powers include a laser machine gun on the left wrist, a spell on the torso that absorbs beams, missile launchers on the shoulders and knees, hip lasers, and teleportation
Aboloth: Powers include an energy whip, electric shocks, hand energy blasts, and a broadsword that emits red electric bolts
AbreTrex: Powers include a drill tank form and flight

If they used MagiKing to fire DekaWing in cannon mode this could have been canon but sadly it was not. This shares the problems of the last two team up movies, but it is not as bad since they tried hard with the character interactions. I have to admit the action is still up to par with other entries.

Now we get into the 30th anniversary series and first sentai in high definition which most know as Boukenger.

49f69623_s.jpg

"Another two parter?"

Yes.

"And the movies?"

Regular movie will be between eps 27 and 28 while the crossovers will be handled separately with Boukenger vs. Super Sentai last.

"Any other weird facts to include?"

Supposedly all the antagonists are based after previous sentai mechs.

"You think it is as bad as everyone says?"

Only one way to find out!

"You're late for this one, are you okay?"

Burn out is creeping in. In fact after this I might do a break before we start getting into Gekiranger. Only temporary, of course.

"You stopping at Go-Busters?"

I decided to reach Kyoryuger if I don't fall apart by then, that Deathryuger guy looks neat!

"You know Cap we still haven't seen you rank all the crossover movies or even an updated all tokusatsu list yet!"

I will seriously need a break for a while once Boukenger is finished, but at some point before Gokaiger I will attempt to do all that.

TV-Nihon's encoding for this is so horrific I can't even see the subs! This was a problem near the end of Magiranger, but not as bad as it gets here! I thought the era of low quality youtube vids for streaming was over, but I guess not (Bandai still needs to release Gundam X on blu-ray). Now for the actual series! Pink got a grand total of two focus eps WHILE LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE INCLUDING SILVER GOT AT LEAST FOUR! I dare say Black even got five! Yellow they're trying to do an amnesia past, likely a reference to Flashman, and it takes up more time than it should. Red here is the first stoic red ranger since GoGo-V which I get since this is meant to harken back to the older entries, even DaiBouken's combinations resemble 80s sentai. The various villain factions are meant to be refs to older sentai villain groups, Gordom being of the old civilizations of lost technology, Jaryu being of the scientists that use their research for evil, Dark Shadow being of terrorists in general, and Ashua Clan of creatures that want to wreck everyone's ****. It's very unique and brings up a pattern that was present in Dekaranger and Magiranger: The villains are not united. They fight and bicker with each other without any real alliances and side switching occurs every now and then. If the first trilogy of the post-Timerangers sentai was "kiddy with wabbly props" (not that Boukenger doesn't have that problem too) then this trilogy can be defined as "bad guys don't like each other". This also makes a theme that was prevalent in episodes of previous sentai series, but not a main theme: Trust. The rangers don't entirely trust each other at times and it is only with their adventuring that they learn to trust one another. Most teams get along quickly and only have serious bickering every now and then, but here trust is actually a major theme even if not spoken outright. Toei editing.... Is just kind of there, a minor step down, but nowhere near as bad as other entries had it.

And DaiBouken is awesome. That is one manly fucking robot! Kind of in the same way Gravion is, very confident and valorous and can whoop every level of ass imaginable. Top that off with some good music and it's safe to say it's not going to be on the lower end of the spectrum.:coolshades:

Well they tried to give Pink and Blue more eps, but not enough to catch up! I find it amusing that Yellow stopped having episodes when they revealed she was Lemurian royalty, almost like they needed Black to hog up more screen time while Red and Silver keep a reasonable pace. Writing wise this tanked hard as time went on, mainly due to a lack of world building or traveling to other locations or potential to tie this to previous sentai. This is also ignoring how very kiddy it got over time. Gaja more or less blended into the background until the final three eps (not going to lie, the final battle itself was solid). They tried to make the jaryus evil potential versions of the Boukengers, but the parallels were so overlooked, unfocused, and had so little development that Ryuuon's speech toward Red near his end was kind of out of nowhere. Dark Shadow was not as bad, but Yaiba's betrayal came out of nowhere. As for the Ashura Clan, most of their episodes was just showing up with quester robots to blow up buildings. By having different villain factions it divided their potential. Zubaan was just kind of there and his strength is slowly forgotten about near the end. Top that off with questionably sluggishness in the pacing and failed comedy and you have.... quite a lot hindering this series from being better than it currently is. It is kind of sad considering this series has the best mecha in the franchise. One last minor problem is that Gaja and Demon Bird are still around at the end, meaning they have double the stupid "lock Daimao away" ending Kakuranger had! Is Boukenger bad? Absolutely not, it is good in it's own right, it just has major hindrances that become more notable over time.

Might as well bring in the rankings.

Boukenger vs. Super Sentai coming soon!

THIRTIETH! ANNIVERSARY! MOVIE!

Boukenger vs. Super Sentai:

At a dock at night Gaja gives a demon named Chronos a briefcase with three gordom engines. In return for the engines Gaja simply wants the Boukengers dead. A red figure views this on top of some girders. The next day Black lays around as Negative Syndicate activity is down. Red tells them to be prepared just as Mr. Voice alerts them to Negative Syndicate activity on the coast. The intro plays, acknowledging all previous sentai as the opening theme plays and the Boukengers take down a garrison of karths. Gaja and Chronos appear, Black smack talks them before the majin of time introduces himself and unleashes leaves to make them disappear. Silver and the manager wonder what the hell happened. The red figure from earlier yells at Silver with his back turned, telling him he will die. Silver demands an identity and the red figure turns around, calling himself AkaRed. He reveals he is the leader of all Super Sentai, born from the spirits of all the red rangers and their wishes of peace as he jumps down (that has to be bad for the knees). Chronos is his arch nemesis who is trying to take the greatest Precious in mankind's history. In order to save his friends Silver must cooperate with past heroes who he happens to have in his Super Sentai Address Book. MagiYellow pops up first before cutting to a bunch of clock gears where the Boukengers wake up to. Pink cannot get a signal before cutting to a boxing match, one of the boxers being MagiYellow. Silver keeps trying to get his attention as we get a brief clipshow of him from Magiranger. MagiYellow loses thanks to him and Silver is thrown out. After that we see DekaBreak doing a sting operation with alienizers, complete with a clipshow. Silver walks in to recruit him, but just gets punched and thrown until he is out of a window. Gaja and Chronos go to the area where MagiShine and Meemy fought to the death with the intention of resurrecting the Infershia leader as one of his three evil priests. Chronos uses a gordom engine and puts an hourglass on it while the Boukengers keep trying to find a way out. MagiShine shows up to the time limbo to show them a way out. Silver is then contacted by AbareBlack, told the situation by AkaRed as a clipshow occurs. A portal between worlds is opening up and thinks about going through. Chronos then goes to an underground cave for his next priest. Meanwhile, MagiShine explains they are in a sub space that can collapse at any time, Smoky shows up to tell them to start worrying. After that a black car escorts some movie actress- Oh it's HurricaneBlue as indicated by the clipshow, wow she changed hairstyles. Silver gets lost in a crowd of fans. Memmy is revived once the hourglass is done, gets his own clipshow, and turns into purple light to fly off. Silver sits in a stadium, finding this task useless as he throws it away and thinks of his friends. CUCUMBER MUNCH. He sees Meemy flying and decides to follow after transforming. Meemy meets up with the majin of time, Silver attacking shortly after. The two villains thrash him with little effort when the four rangers from earlier show up to help him! However, the rangers bicker with one another, getting in the way of each other. Chronos blasts them before leaving. MgiShine spots a locked door, but it is electrified. Red uses Zubaan to help out while the second engine revives Tsuetsue in front of Gaja complete with a clipshow. Gaja promises to take over the world while she calls him old man. At the SGS base the rangers bicker with each other. Silver comes in and talks loud enough with enough passion to make the rangers realize they need to be a team. I condensed what happens over the course of four minutes.

After the hands together moment, the five head out montage style while the Boukengers prepare for an escape. AkaRed says Red will escape soon and until he arrives he will take his place. Pink analyzes the door just as the sub space gets unstable. Chronos finds out the gordom engine is missing just as his third priest was resurrecting. The rangers arrive, jump down from a cliff, and AkaRed uses the Super Sentai Ball so everyone can use it Gorenger Storm style to destroy the grunts. Boom. Gaja is in shock and Chronos throws a fit. Pink tells them where to aim, Zubaan and Smoky destroy it, and part of Chronos breaks off to reveal the other gate to sub space. AkaRed tells them to attack it and they proceed to do so. AkaRed fends off the villains, first by turning into a fire ball that takes them to a field. This is followed by turning into MagiRed to fight them. GaoRed is next which annoys Tsuetsue. The door eventually breaks when Silver attacks it up close. The Boukengers and MagiShine make it out, AkaRed runs over and states they must work together while Red is the temporary leader. On a cliff everyone does intros with AkaRed spinning to form the five previous red rangers. The pose ends with a back explosion and the 30th anniversary logo. Gaja uses his club to go clubbing, sadly not while eating a club sandwich. Black, Blue, AbareBlack, and MagiYellow deal with Gaja, Yellow, Pink, and HurricaneBlue deal with Tsuetsue, Silver, DekaBreak, and MagiShine deal with Meemy, and the reds deal with Chronos, AkaRed using AbareRed's tyranno rod. AkaRed gets tangled by electric vines, giving DekaRed's pistols to Red so he can go shooter happy. Next he gives him HurricaneRed's weapon to freed him. Red uses his Bouken Javelin to fight Chronos one on one, soon winning. Furabijo shows up, revealing to be the third priest, that and she was just walking around out of boredom. She uses telekinetic explosions to take the rangers down. After that Chronos shocks the three revived villains, turning them into a staff called the Sankenja (literally three blade evil) Staff. This causes Chronos to become giant sized with a hazard level of 666. Everyone transforms again because Furabijo was over powered. The GoGo Vehicles are summoned to use Ultimate DaiBouken followed by Siren Builder. Chronos brags about being superior as the staff fires red enegry bolts. The mechs retaliate via Ultimate Blaster and Triple Liquid Bomber, respectively. However, he is tough enough to withstand him- Oh those bolts are electrical. The rangers are forced out and Red calls for DaiVoyager to be used. The Adventure Double Screw is used only for Chronos to use the Screw Return. The Death Wand Slash is used to topple DaiVoyager, AkaRed asking the others for him to use their powers to save the Boukengers. They proceed to do this, AkaRed jumps up to empower DaiVoyager with new parts. The opening theme plays as Chronos is unimpressed as the Boukengers state these parts are made of Super Sentai souls. Double Fire Punch! Pictures of the previous teams are absorbed into DaiVoyager, firing on Chronos via the torso and causing the majin of time, and his priests, to explode. Gaja curses them as he flees, the others celebrating on the ground. At the SGS base the rangers part ways, giving collective thanks. The end credits role with pics and logos of every sentai series as a weird song plays in the background. The end credits scene consists of Red picking up a rose and wondering what happened to AkaRed just before Mr. Voice calls them to action and AkaRed flies into space (is he an Ultra?), off to slumber until he is needed again.

Chronos: Powers include the Chronos Majutsu Excite Leaf, a gear that launches fire balls and energy blasts, teleportation, twin electrical vines, eye energy blasts, the Sankenja Staff which allows him to grow in size and can fire red electric bolts, and summoning energy screws called the Screw Reverse to form red energy cyclones

Nothing contradicts continuity persay (Tsuetsue being revived in a cave rather than a field is odd if you consider Hurricanger vs. Gaoranger canon, but given Chronos having a time theme it probably had to do with the moment of death in his ceremony). This movie feels like a cross between Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai and a regular versus movie, sure the finishing attacks and AkaRed are celebrations of the franchise, but the team members do pointless bickering nonsense instead of learning off one another or exploring common themes in Super Sentai. Furabijo over powering twelve rangers and AkaRed was eyeroll worthy. Overall though it was still good. Next time we head into Gekiranger.... I seriously need a break from sentai for a while. I know I said I was going to take a break after this, but Gekiranger is a special case I'll explain about next time.

Fry the sky as we enter the last quarter of pre-Kyuranger sentai known as Gekiranger.

Gekiranger_28_30.jpg

You would think better group shots would be on the internet since it aired ten years ago....

"Another two parter?"

Yes.

"And the movie?"

Between eps 22 and 23.

"So what makes this sentai so unique?"

It caused the biggest dip in sentai ratings since Ohranger, even though Boukenger had slightly lower ratings than Magiranger, this cut the viewership by a full percent and has only gone further downhill since.

"Can we blame Gekiranger for the fall of sentai?"

I would not go that far.

"Anything else?"

I have to be honest, of all the suits in the franchise this ties with Toquger for worst, I don't know why but this really does not click with me.

"You still using TV-Nihon?"

KissAsian uploaded someone else's subs and I don't know who did it, but they keep replacing geki with wild, the hell?

"Are you taking a break after this?"

Yes, after Gekiranger vs. Boukenger I am taking a break, the burn out is becoming harder on me and I have many things to catch up on, mostly taking dumps on IBO threads on /a/ (which deserve it).

No idea what to really think at this point. The fights and (to a lesser degree) the villains minus Mere are fine, the problem is literally everything else. Red is very obnoxious and childish, Yellow and Blue are the same character, the mentors do surprisingly little, most of the episodes are just a lot of training, the humor is forced, and the music is subpar, I dare say some of the worst in the franchise. You guys remember back in Gaoranger's review I mention all the toyetic-ness took over? Well from that to Boukenger you can at least see them as Toys R Us toyetic, starting from Gekiranger onward to Zyuohger every mech looks like McDonalds Happy Meal toyetic, no idea how to feel. I doubt we'll ever get a sentai mecha as glorious as DaiBouken and DaiVoyager for a long time which is ultra disappointing. The series so far seems to be good on it's own, but there is so little to talk about.

This is end of the line with part 2.

Well know I have thoughts: The pacing was obnoxiously slow, the opening theme I can now say is the second worst in the franchise after Maskman, the ranger balance is easily among the worst (Violet had what two episodes?), both extra rangers felt very tacked on, and the writing, especially the humor and the arc about Red and his dad, was pretty much lackluster. Chopper tried stealing screen time and succeeded for a while after being introduced. Yes there was a little Toei editing, but still minimalized. However, I hesitate to call this bad because the villains and action were still good, the series is more mediocre than outright bad. I still call this better than Sun Vulcan, Liveman, Hurricanger, and Megaranger based on the fact that the main goals of the villains made sense. With that said it is still tremendously disappointing. I noticed that the individual weapons were dropped around the time Violet showed up and they spammed super mode as an attempt to make up for it, were the props stolen or something? Time for rankings so we can finish this.
