BAT TO THE FUTURE: The Return of Bruce Wayne

OMG.:O_O:

I can't even believe that they're bring Bruce Wayne back from the dead, but I was expecting to be more like a Batman Beyond moment right here.

When it comes to the most famous characters like these, Licensing is the enemy of progress.

DC Comics' licensors want the same old Bat. Batman cannot change, ever. Things are going to stay exactly the same. In less than a year, when things look like they end, things also go back to normal, which cheapens the impact of the last story, making it look like a desperate, prima-donna publicity stunt.

More than once, it happened to Superman, it happened to Batman, it happened to Spider-Man, it happened to Captain America, etc. In most cases, Licensing will never allow Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Peter Parker, Steve Rogers, etc., to ever change, age, die, marry*, etc., They're just corporate entities.

And these things have happened to Godzilla and Ultraman, too! The two most licensed characters in Japan. When Godzilla epically dies in movies after the first, Toho stipulates that the filmmakers HAVE to show him coming back to life somehow. And the Ultra Family is not allowed to die. Ever.

If all the above characters were creator-owned, that would be very different.

*=Some Spidey titles (not ALL of them, mind you), including the newspaper strip, show him still married to Mary Jane Watson (who knows his secret identity). Others show him being the same outcast teenager he started out as, for licensing purposes. Licensors want the more famous outcast teenage nerd Peter Parker, not the current married man.

Man hes coming back already, jesus I stop ready comics for a couple of months and this **** happens? Can't we just keep him dead for a little longer, I like Dick Grayson as Batman (though at first I hated the idea because Nightwing was my favorite series at the time)

How about "MOST" of them?

Peter being a "teenaged outcast" is NOT the most memorable, because that itself didnt last long in the original comics under Lee and Ditko let alone Lee and Romita. Hm being married became the more iconic version.

Despite MJ being revealed as a clone, the FOX animated series featured Peter getting married, so, again, the licensors had nothing to do with that. Peter finding MJ off-screen wouldnt have altered that marraige seeing as the clone died without anyone's knowledge and MJ already loved Peter, so everyone got their cake and ate it.

He was portrayed as married in the short-lived Spider-Man Unlimited, licensors had nothing to do with that either.

Even the comics that don't feature him married don't portray him as an outcast anymore, but as an oridinary teenager with powers surrounded by an extended family (in particular Ultimate Comics Spider-Man)

It has nothing to do with what "licensors" want, Marvel simply decided they could have their cake and eat it

I...honestly don't know how to take this news, since I just got back to reading comics after like, 3 or 4 years. The news of Dick taking over the matle of the Bat made me jittery and excited, and my anticipation was well met with the release of recent titles like Batman and Robin, Red Robin, etc. They seriously upped the ante the moment they had Grayson wear the cowl, and a lot of fans seem to appreciate that they are showing a lot of effort and dedication with the new arc, even some of my friends got back to reading these things after they heard that the Batman titles were getting a lot more exciting.

Everyone knew that Bruce was coming back sometime, although I think that announcing that he'll be back this early is kinda disappointing, especially when the current comic line is actually getting better without him (sorta). I'm not saying that it won't be as good with him back, I just hope than they can execute something that will make the fans satisfied rather than make them feel like children who just had their shiny toy taken and replaced with a rusty old toy.
