Anime vs. Tokusatsu

...Berserk doesn't have a non existent ending, Miura has wide-and-well planned out everything that will happen through the course of Berserk except for perhaps the first three volumes which seemed to be action filler until he decided what direction he wanted to take the series. Just because the series is slowly produced it doesn't mean there won't be an end.

Like Osamu Tezuka's Pheonix, for example. He worked on it his whole life and it's his life work but you didn't see people complaining about the schedule of how it was done. Berserk is Miura's life work and he plans to pretty much take his careful time on every aspect on it.
Kay, but I'm talking about the anime here, since this is an anime vs tokusatsu thread, I like the manga just fine, it's one of the longest manga I've followed, but the anime is pretty weak and did have a non existent ending.

I'm pretty sure ALL of Jojo sans Part 1 and Part 6 is just pure awesome. The design, style, and everything about it is much more unique than most manga or any medium out there period (including tokusatsu).
If you say so. I got so bored with part 5 that I just gave up on the series there.

No, I absolutely love both. I just think that most of what's out on the anime market right now is completely unwatchable. I like tokusatsu from just about every era, but I usually prefer anime that was made prior to 2001. The only newer anime that looks interesting to me is The Skull Man, but it looks like that doesn't have any chance in hell of coming to America, since all people want over here are bad shounen anime (Naruto) and lame comedies (Lucky Star). A friend recommended Gurren Lagann to me, to I think I'll check that out, too.
Kino's Journey, Gintama, Galaxy Railways, Turn A Gundam, Witchblade, Romeo X Juliet, Full Metal Alchemist, Ayakashi Ayashi, I could go on, there are tons of excellent anime out there. Because of how many are made each season, there's a lot more crap than there is good stuff.

The problem is really...the general viewing culture in America.

If it's animated, it's meant for the kiddies (much of Naruto's popularity is because it's being aired on the actual Cartoon Network block, which has Children as it's target audience). Only true believers would invest time and money to search for titles like Saiyuki Reload, Grenadier, xxxHolic, and other Mature-themed and great anime most others will overlook because it's animated. Heck, even One Piece (which 4Kids so gladly butchered to cater to the kiddies) has a lot of mature themes to it.

Likewise, Tokusatsu is much maligned here, cause of the henshins, the action scenes, and the such. Now don't get me wrong, I did enjoy some of the Saban-era Power Rangers series (Lost Galaxy most of all), but since the Disney acquisition, Power Rangers has been dumbed down to be sickeningly sweet (again, for the kiddies). I do admit that even in the Saban period, a lot of the series don't really adhere to the original Sentai, but Saban, at least, made some of them to be serious. Again, only true believers would invest time and money to look to the actual tokusatsu series, such as Juken Sentai Gekiranger, Mirai Sentai Timeranger, and Kamen Rider Ryuki.

And like mattcomics-kun said, Anime vs. Tokusatsu should not really exist. I mean, in Japan, the anime and tokusatsu fanbases feed off of each other's energies.

For me It's only gonna be Toku for me because ever since I discovered it in late 2003 it became my fave and I now watch a few Anime since NOTHING COMPARES TO TOKUSATSU IN PURE ENTERTAINMENT!!!

And yes, if I get bored with Disney Channel live action ones there's always a Toku to cheer me up.

examples of these are

Engine sentai Go-onger
Juukou B-Fighter
Kamen Rider Blade
Seiun Kamen Machine Man
Ultraman Tiga

so I'm all Toku!

Okay, I've enjoyed a bit of Anime in my time. However, Tokusatsu definitely overshadows Anime, for me. I normally lose interest in an Anime 5-10 episodes in... but with (most) toku shows, I'm just getting addicted to it by then.

Anime isn't bad, but one thing does get on my nerves:

The amount of effort that is put into the show. Granted, I'm sure it's the "style", but I'll explain in a bit on why I don't like it.

You know, 3 frame movement, big eyes, lack of anatomy, only lips moving, etc, etc. Yes, not all Anime is like this, but the majority of them work around this formula, especially choppy frame rates.

Now, yes, I know this is the "style" that they are headed towards. That's not a bad thing. What's bad is that how fans try to imitate this themselves, either in animation or drawings. When they draw people, they cover up the fact that they don't look realistic with the excuse of "it's Anime style". Thus, we get guys with spikey hair, huge cross eyes, triangular mouths, overdressed, and unproportional. Truely hurts on the artist's perspective.

To put in other words, here's something some guy on some board wrote:

Manga is a disease in many ways, because people think that they can become a great manga artist without a grounding in life drawing and such beforehand. This is not true. There are a few FANTASTIC manga artists who post here, and you can see in all of their work that they have done hundreds of hours of studies on realistic anatomy, lighting and colour, composition. Only then have they settled into their chosen style.

You have not done this, it is quite obvious. Your work is derivative manga.

No offense to anyone.

So this is my only issue with Anime. Not with Anime itself, but the reaction to it.

Needless debate.

When you get down to it what you have in anime is animation. A medium for telling stories through moving artwork. Tokusatsu, live-action special effects movie making used to tell stories. Both come with their own genres and stylizations. Pros and cons. Traditions and fads. ..and they both influence each other back and forth far more than most people and most fans of either one realize.

The best response I've seen so far in this thread. No offense to anyone in this thread that had posted!

For me, both Anime and Tokusatsu have its good qualities and bad qualities. Both have something that I like and I enjoy watching either of the genres. And as matt stated, both do influence each other in some way.

Just a pet peeve I want to get off my chest:

To people that say this toku is garbage or this anime is garbage.....why do you say things like that? Some of the things you people say are like if said anime or toku killed your family.

I mean, they're just shows. Just sayin.

And that is my cue to leave before the lynch mob gets me.:confused2

I was under the impression anime and manga was interchangeable in this discussion which is why I listed some manga only stuff. :|

What was so boring about Part 5? Matter of fact it's one of my favorites in the whole series. If there's any part to get bored at it's definitely Part 4 or 6 but Part 4 redeems itself for having some of the most obscure powers and for having Kira who is an awesome villain.

I agree that the two mediums aren't that comparable but when you DO compare them honestly anime/manga outclasses tokusatsu. However if there's one medium that outclasses all other entertainment mediums it's written literature, true fact.
