I do agree that it's a style which sometimes gets emulated simply out of motivation to try and be anime, rather than be influenced by anime, if that makes any sense. There's plenty of artists out there who have developed their own style that draws upon anime for influence/inspiration, and they put out great stuff. And then there's those who just try to copy the style of Show X for everything they do, and put that above all else, like the quality of the actual art itself. Then I can see how you wouldn't like the effect the style has.

Or it could just be some of us like drawing in that style? I'll be the first to admit I don't draw the most realistic people, but it's not because I can't (God knows honors art class saw to that!) It's because I like working in the style that I've developed over the years. It's my style. It appeals to my tastes, and above all when I draw something I do it because it's fun and I enjoy drawing, and if someone else likes it, that's a bonus. No offense, but I feel like this is aimed right at me because that just about sums up my way of drawing people, minus a few things. :laugh:

Art is a matter of taste. I've taken interest in drawing in manga style since the mid-to-late 80s before appreciating other styles. Nowadays, I draw American cartoon/pop art style (Bruce Timm, Stephen Silver, Darwyn Cooke, Faruk Cemalovic, etc.), with tinges of manga (Gou Nagai or Jirou Kuwata influenced). Hell, I just find cartoon styles more fun and appealing to work with!

Most of the time, the best criticism I've gotten is that my characters look stiff. That I can accept, and am trying very hard to improve on my art dynamics. But I get a bit annoyed when I'm told that my drawing style doesn't look "realistic" enough. I've grown tired of this "absolute realism" bullshit. (Some use "realism" as an excuse to be "hard-edged".) But sometimes (and more recently), I've even gotten "if it's not totally manga-influenced, it sucks." That really pisses me off. (Just like the "if it's not from Japan, it sucks" stance many people have taken these days.)

Yeah. For a awhile any kind of style in comics that was considered "cartoony" was looked down on and in some circles still is. I love a Neal Adams, George Perez or an Alex Ross but I don't want to draw like that or have every comicbook look like that anymore than I'd want everyone of them to look like Darwyn Cooke or Ed McGuiness or Jack Kirby. Or every cartoon to look like Sean "Cheeks-74" Galloway designed it even though I'm digging on Spectacular Spider-Man big time.

Not even to say I don't have some artstyles that I'm put off by. I have never really liked very shadowy and scratchy artsyles like Lenil Yu for example. But while I would prefer that style not be used on a character like Superman it would be wrong of me to say that he should never be allowed to draw him for publication because that is really no different than someone saying no one with manga or animation influence should either.

All of these approaches are valid. I kinda look at it as realistic styles are from the eye. Cartooning is from the gut.

The focus is less on draftsmanship and more on energy and emotion. It's almost less meant to be seen and more to be felt. It puts you right in the moment. .and while you may not be conforming to Burne Hogarth rules of anatomy that doesn't mean that cartoonists can be careless or that there is less effort and craft. You have a very few lines with which to make your character, make your point and make it look cool. Expression, gesture, character, there is still real thought and real work going on there.
