34,000!

I just read in TIME Magazine that last year, 34,000 Japanese people committed suicide. It must be a really depressing and stressful life they live over there.

It is, but that doesn't have anything to do with it's suicide rate. It's a pretty peaceful country, no doubt about that, but that doesn't mean that it's citizens won't ever get depressed enough to jump off a bridge or in front of a shinkansen.
