On here, yes. In Japan, no. They like their women to be Stepford Housewives, hence the "appeal" of Mako and Kotoha. In some ways the Shinkenger girls represent two different sides of the ideal Japanese woman: Mako is the cooking/cleaning/motherly side, Kotoha is the sweet and submissive side.
It does bother me but although such characters aren't very bright, it's worse to have a character like Mako or Urara who is portrayed as reasonably intelligent but has to be reduced to the lowest common denominator and want to spend her life cooking and doing mundane household chores, because "that's what women do!"
Also, some of the ditzier female characters are written that way because no one on the whole team is very bright - the Hurricanegers are one example, the Go-ongers another (except Blue, who gets shafted in the same way as Mako.) DekaPink is kind of an airhead but ends up with Green, who lacks common sense. But I agree, the "kawaiiko" thing really does wear thin after a while.
And that's fine! It's just worth remembering that not everyone will. There's room for women who aren't feminine to exist, so I figure there should be room to see them on TV, too. Even feminine women tend to experience un-feminine emotions like rage or depression at various points in their lives. I like seeing different sorts of women on TV, so as long as the concept fits the show I'm usually happy enough provided the writing is consistent.
Super Sentai is interesting to me because it's so rigidly formulaic and repetitive that it ends up telling its stories in an extremely distinct, stylized fashion. I really think it must be approached as a genre unto itself with only team-based tokusatsu as meaningful forerunners. Solo hero tokusatsu, films, most anime, and even Japanese drama for adults all have a very different feel than Super Sentai. American media might as well be from a different planet.
Oh will you shut up? The more you talk, the more I just embrace everything you hate.
Yeah! I came here to read made-up BS rumors about a show that nobody knows anything about because it's months away from premiering! Forget trying to pass the time by actually talking about something, let's just post up another fake, crappy, fuzzy hand-drawn picture and eat up pages with comments like "Cool!" "Wow!" "Bad-ass!" ":buttrock:" or "Reminds me of Ohranger!"

Any discussion of any TV show is ultimately pointless. Everyone here's going to be dead in about 70 years no matter what. Watching TV is nothing more than marking time.![]()
