Buffy The Vampire Slayer Could Be Returning Soon

Once in every generation, a Slayer is born. One girl in all the world, a Chosen One.* In the late 90s and early 2000s that slayer was Buffy Summers of Sunnydale, California. But with a new generation, it’s almost time for someone new to pick up the stake… *Unless some witch does a spell or something and makes it so there’s more than one Slayer; that can happen. Every now and then we hear rumors the Buffy show could come back, but they rarely get far enough to amount to anything. We have a good feeling about this one, though: Variety reports that Hulu is on the verge of greenlighting a pilot for a revival of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in a minor role, meaning she would be the mentor to the next Slayer (I can already hear her anguish at realizing she grew up to be Giles). The pilot is to be directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals), from a script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). As for the creator, don’t worry, Joss will be nowhere near this thing and the doors will be locked so he can’t get in. […]

A revival? Great! But what about the existing Buffyverse? Angel, the comics, the Slayer mythology—there’s already a deep world to explore. Instead of just handing the torch to a new character, I’d love to see something that acknowledges everything that’s come before. Does this new Slayer exist in the same continuity? Will we see any of the old cast return beyond Buffy? I need answers before I get excited.

I watched Buffy here and there back in the day, and I enjoyed it, but I don’t have strong feelings about a reboot. If it’s good, great. If not, I’ll move on. What interests me is that they got an Oscar-winning director. That’s rare for a TV pilot, and it makes me curious. I also like the idea of Gellar playing a mentor—she’s a great actress who deserves more recognition. Whether the show succeeds will depend on the writing. Good luck to them.

I actually think this could work! Revivals don’t have to be carbon copies of the original, and maybe that’s a good thing. Buffy already expanded its mythology beyond a single Slayer, so there’s plenty of room to tell a new story. Zhao’s involvement is fascinating—she has a great visual eye, and I’d love to see her take on the supernatural. I also appreciate that Whedon is not involved. He created something brilliant, but his presence is not needed for it to evolve. If the writers respect the core themes—girl power, found family, overcoming darkness—this could be a fresh, exciting take.

Wait, so is Buffy still the main character, or is she just a mentor now? The article says Sarah Michelle Gellar has a "minor role," which makes it sound like she’s stepping back, but does that mean the new Slayer is the actual lead? If that’s the case, is this even Buffy the Vampire Slayer anymore, or just a spin-off using the name? I don’t mind a new Slayer taking the spotlight, but if Buffy herself is barely in it, they should be upfront about that. A show called Buffy should still have Buffy as a major presence.

Is Sarah Michelle Gellar still playing Buffy, or are they casting a younger actress for flashbacks or some kind of rebooted version? The article says she has a “minor role,” but does that mean she’s still Buffy, just older and mentoring the new Slayer, or are they replacing her with someone else? I’d rather see Gellar continue as Buffy instead of them trying to recast her with a younger actress. If this is a true continuation, she should still be the same character we know.
