Buffy The Vampire Slayer Could Be Returning Soon

Once in every generation, a Slayer is born. One girl in all the world, a Chosen One.* In the late 90s and early 2000s that slayer was Buffy Summers of Sunnydale, California. But with a new generation, it’s almost time for someone new to pick up the stake…

*Unless some witch does a spell or something and makes it so there’s more than one Slayer; that can happen.

Every now and then we hear rumors the Buffy show could come back, but they rarely get far enough to amount to anything. We have a good feeling about this one, though: Variety reports that Hulu is on the verge of greenlighting a pilot for a revival of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in a minor role, meaning she would be the mentor to the next Slayer (I can already hear her anguish at realizing she grew up to be Giles).

The pilot is to be directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals), from a script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). As for the creator, don’t worry, Joss will be nowhere near this thing and the doors will be locked so he can’t get in. This feels weird to say, but it’s where we’re at.

Joss not only invented Buffy but the snarky mile-a-minute quipping known as Buffy Speak, which just about every other teen show of the era adopted with varying levels of success. What I learned from watching TV during that time was that Buffy Speak is harder to mimic than it seems. It can go very wrong if done badly, and many shows did it badly. Some people didn’t even like the Buffy Speak on Buffy, but I feel the originator did it best.

So do Zhao and the Zuckermans have what it takes to write proper Buffy Speak? If the pilot is picked up for series, we’ll find out.
