Everything Announced During The February Nintendo Direct
Today’s Nintendo Direct was more about the present than the future, disgorging a boatload of demos and surprise “today!” releases but little hints in the way of what the Switch will be doing with its time past the spring. To all those who believed Internet rumors that we’d be seeing the Switch 2 or a sequel to Tomodachi Life, sorry you’re so gullible.
We might as well start with everything we get today, because it’s a lot:
Nintendo Switch Online — Game Boy
Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass — Game Boy Advance
Generally we get a new platform added to NSO when they start running out of things to put on the previous one. Hey, there’s plenty for the N64 that isn’t there yet (namely from Rare…is that a problem?) The Game Boy platform will be added immediately and includes Tetris, Super Mario Land 2, Link’s Awakening DX, Gargoyle’s Quest, Metroid II, Wario Land 3, Kirby’s Dream Land, Game and Watch Gallery 3, and weirdly, the Game Boy Color version of Alone in the Dark. The Game Boy Advance section requires expansion money, but if you gave that already, you get immediate access to Super Mario Advance 4 (really Mario 3, and it includes the eReader levels), Wario Ware, Minish Cap, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Mario Kart Super Circuit and Kuru Kuri Kururin.
Future additions to the Game Boy library will include Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, Pokemon Trading Card Game and Kirby Tilt ‘n Tumble. The Game Boy Advance’s future offerings include Metroid Fusion, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Fire Emblem, F-Zero Maximum Velocity and Golden Sun.
Here are the other things released today, most of them free:
Octopath Traveler II Demo
Sea of Stars Demo
Kirby: Return To Dream Land Demo
Fire Emblem Engage: Expansion Pass Wave 2
WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros
Metroid Prime Remastered (Digital Version)
Yeah, we can’t believe they shadow-dropped a fully polished Metroid Prime rerelease either.
Have fun with all that and look forward to everything else announced today, in order of release date:
Blanc — February 14
Volume 3 of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass — February 15
Tales of Symphonia Remastered — February 17
Metroid Prime Remastered — February 22 (Physical Version)
The price we collectors have to pay…
Octopath Traveler II — February 24
Kirby Return To Dream Land Deluxe — February 24
Dead Cells Castlevania Crossover add-on — March 6
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon — March 17
Have A Nice Death — March 22
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — May 12
Still sticking to its date. There will be the expected Collector’s Edition and amiibo, but Nintendo said nothing about reports of a $69.99 price for the base game.
Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection — April 16
Minecraft Legends — April 18
Advance Wars 1 & 2 — April 21
FINALLY! We’ve been denied this completed game for too long.
Omega Strikers — April 27
TRON Identity — April 2023
Of all the things I expected today, I can say “TRON visual novel” was not one of them.
Splatoon 3 DLC Wave 1: Inkopolis — Spring 2023
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 4 — Spring 2023
Etrian Odyssey: Origins Collection — June 1
All three of the DS Etrian Odyssey games in one package (or you can buy them separately if you wish). These were hard as nails on their home platform, but this version will include some player improvements like an actual map.
We Love Katamari HD — June 2
Remastered version of We Love Katamari. NSO Ezpansion Pass members will get to try a demo free for one week, starting February 20.
Harmony: Fall of Reverie — June 23
Don’t know much about this, except you’re a young woman with special powers and it’s from DONTNOD (and it’s not a Life Is Strange game).
Master Detective Archives Raincode — June 30
Pikmin 4 — July 21
Disney Illusion Island — July 28
A platformer featuring the stylized Paul Rudish versions of Mickey and friends.
Sea of Stars — August 29
Samba de Amigo: Party Central — Summer 2023
Ghost Trick Phantom Detective — Summer 2023
This needed a rerelease badly. I missed my chance at the DS original.
Baiten Kaitos 1 & 2 — Summer 2023
Remaster of the classic Gamecube card battling RPG.
Deca Police — 2023
Fashion Dreamer — sometime in 2023
Fantasy Life: The Girl Who Steals Time — sometime in 2023
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam — no one knows when this will be out
