Electronic Arts announces Need for Speed: Rivals
What do you get when you combine Frostbite 3, Ghost Games, the creators of Burnout and AllDrive, an innovative feature that facilitates seamless transition between solo and multiparty play? Need for Speed: Rivals, that’s what.
Coming to current generation platforms on November 19th (and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sometime afterwards), NFS: Rivals promises to deliver a white-knuckle ride that captures the adrenaline and intensity of the street’s ultimate rivalry: cops vs. racers. According to the substantial press release we received from Electronic Arts, gamers can play as either faction as per Hot Pursuit, and take on a multitude of high stakes circuit, pursuit and time trial-based events.
Marcus Nilsson, Ghost Games’ Executive Producer, made the following statement:
“The Need for Speed franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games. For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In Need for Speed: Rivals we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before.”
NFS: Rivals is said to push the limits of the genre with a range of improvements and features:
- Stunning visuals – the open environment of Redview County is brought to life with next-gen levels of detail, powered by DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine
- Need for Speed’s Autolog network – gamers can compare stats and challenge their friends anytime, anywhere, and share their accomplishments with ease
- All-new AllDrive – players will be able to enter and exit friends’ races on-the-fly, creating a world where no two events will ever be the same
- Customisation – drivers can modify their cars with fresh paintjobs, personalised license plates, liveries, decals and alloys, as well as various performance enhancements
- Pursuit and Evasion technology – 11 upgradeable gadgets, such as turbo boosts, jammers and EMPs for racers, and shockwaves, roadblocks and helicopters for cops
The game will also reintroduce the Ferrari licence to the series. For the first time in seven years, you’ll get the opportunity to take to the tarmac in some of the manufacturer’s most luxurious, desirable automobiles. F12berlinetta, anyone?
