  • Memorable Quote:  (Teacher) “You’re too young to understand the world.” … (Student) “Sir, I’m all grown up. All I left to do is age.”

SUMMARY: When a high school girl disappears in a small Korean village, a new PE teacher and the victim’s best friend uncover a web of corruption that the townspeople refuse to acknowledge.

♦ There’s Always That One Teacher Who Cares

In “The Villagers”, Yeok Ki-Cheol, a former boxing champion, has taken a job as a PE teacher at the local all-girls high school. Why did a boxing champ turn teacher? It’s complicated. But not nearly as complicated as his “new life story” is going to get when he decides to help find a missing girl. From the moment he arrives in the village, he senses something is wrong: the villagers are anxious, evasive, and unwilling to discuss the teen’s disappearance.

Kang Yoo-Jin is the missing girl’s best friend. She is the only person actively searching for her because she knows her friend did not run away. Kang Yoo-Jin is rebellious, outspoken, and deeply frustrated by the adults’ refusal to take the case seriously. She skips class to investigate on her own. Yeok Ki-Cheol is also curious about the missing girl because … her name is on his list. He’s supposed to collect money from students who have not paid for their school meals, tuition, etc. Not only has the missing student not paid, but she’s been absent from school for quite a while. He thinks it’s worth asking around to find out more.

Kang Yoo-Jin doesn’t have confidence in her teacher’s “concern”. She believes he’s just like all the rest of the adults and couldn’t care less that her friend is missing and something awful may have happened to her. He just needs to collect the money! But Yeok Ki-Cheol is moved by her determination to solve this mystery and begins helping her. Together, they uncover a disturbing pattern: multiple girls have gone missing, and the police have done nothing. WHY?

He Says He Didn’t Kill Her

Through his own dogged determination, Yeok Ki-Cheol discovers a hidden camera installed in the girls’ restroom. The device leads him to the school’s art teacher. It appears that the art teacher had a relationship with the missing girl. He claims the last time he saw her, she was alive. But it looks suspicious because the teacher confirmed that he picked her up the night she vanished. The art teacher says she got a phone call and asked him to leave her at a gas station. He felt bad about leaving her and came back to check on her. All he found that proved she had been there was her cell phone. The art teacher insists he did not kill her. But the police arrested him. You could say they had already decided he was guilty and the case was closed.

If only the young police officer had never stumbled upon the missing girl’s corpse. Ordered to cover up the discovery, he becomes the first casualty of a conspiracy that quickly turns violent. When the young policeman is attacked, the truth can no longer be denied. Yeok Ki Cheol and Kang Yoo Jin grow more determined than ever to expose the killers and the corrupt system that is protecting the killers. But they’re up against seasoned criminals who know how to make people disappear. Despite lacking formal investigative training, the two refuse to back down. The girl wasn’t found because of an official search effort—she was found because Yeok Ki Cheol, Kang Yoo Jin, and one honest officer kept digging into her disappearance long after everyone else gave up.

Who knows what darkness is hidden beneath the surface of a seemingly quiet village?

Viewership and Rating:

  • IMDb: 6.1 out of 10 stars
  • My Drama List: 7.6 out of 10 stars
  • Letterboxd: 3.1 out of 5 stars

My personal rating is the same as Letterboxd.

“The Villagers” (2018) is sometimes confused with “The Neighbors” (2012). Ma Dong-Seok and Kim Sae-Ron are in both films. Both involve a missing teenage girl and the storyline is intense and kind of creepy.
