I took the time out of my schedule to play some Hyper Light Drifter, in between packing my boxes to send off to storage. I’d been hearing about it from some of my friends on Steam, so I picked it up to see what all the hubhub is about. This game by indie shop Heart Machine, has you taking on the cloak of an unnamed drifter collecting forgotten knowledge, technologies, and broken histories. The game presents its narrative through its own visuals, as well as slide-show dialogue. There is absolutely no written dialogue, and it doesn’t need any to get its point across.

Along with the likes of Cuphead and No Man’s Sky, Hyper Light Drifter has been one of the most eagerly awaited indie games of recent times. After a huge successful Kickstarter campaign, in which developer Heart Machine managed to raise more than $645,000 with a goal of just $27,000, the game was originally slated to release at some point in late 2014. That date has since been pushed back to this year but in an update on their campaign page, the developer has now confirmed that Hyper Light Drifter will not be available until Spring 2016. It has been over a week since E3 rolled around. The conference saw over 50,000 gamers and press looking at the latest hardware and software on offer from  developers all around the world. However, with so much information on offer in such a small amount of time it was easy to miss important news. Hyper Light Drifter burst onto the Kickstarter scene last year quickly reaching a pledge total of $645,158 despite only setting an initial goal of $27,000. That huge success allowed developer Heart Machine to expand the team working on the game, reach more platforms than first planned and include a host of new features. Alex Preston, the lead designer behind the game, was kind enough to answer a number of questions. In this interview he talks about the kind of experience he is hoping to craft, what titles have influenced and how players can expect to fight their way through dungeons.
