Superman And Lois Already Renewed For Second Season
In a sudden, but very on-brand move for The CW, its newest super-series Superman And Lois has been given a second season and a place on the 2021-22 schedule. Given the network’s track record, the renewal was never really in question, but the show’s performance in ratings likely motivated the early decision. Last Tuesday, with the 90-minute premiere and the behind-the-scenes doc that followed it, The CW achieved its highest ratings it had seen in two years. (We figure without those numbers, it might have taken another full week for the show to be renewed.)
Mark Pedowitz, the man who has the worn-out “RENEW” button on his desk, says “The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman & Lois, which delivered for us in a big way on both a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment.”
Contrary to a belief held by some, The CW’s lineup of DC shows is not “winding down.” Yes, Black Lighting and Supergirl are going away (no, we still have no idea when the latter is going to show up again for that final season), but the network has other shows in development and one, Naomi, is currently shooting a pilot. They’re also considering a Black Lightning spinoff called Painkiller, of which a back-door pilot will air later in the season. Sadly, the network passed on a pitch for an Amazonian series called Wonder Girl.
