Yikes, Heroes creator Tim Kring is back and he’s once again trying to restart the once-popular series that burned bright and flamed out just as quickly in the 2000s. Deadline reports that he’s now currently shopping a proposed revival (the second, for those keeping score) to prospective buyers.
When the show premiered on NBC in 2006 it started as a more grounded take on X-Men, about ordinary people around the world discovering they have latent superpowers, seemingly awakened by an eclipse. The eclipse was referenced in the logo, repeated throughout the series and, like a lot of things about it, never fully explained. Kring was likely waiting for the recent real-life eclipse to make this announcement. The proposed revival is called “Heroes Eclipsed.”
Heroes started out pretty great, with a fascinating cast of characters including a cheerleader with super-healing powers that make her immortal, a quirky Japanese man who can blink his way through time and space, and a supervillain that grows more powerful the longer it takes for the others to stop him — and he’s doubly dangerous because he takes their powers by killing them and removing their brains! Add in some kind of government cover-up orchestrated by the cheerleader’s nameless father, and you get one enjoyable season of TV. …And then there’s the rest of it.
Kring whiffed the season finale, and followed that up with a disaster of a second season. The heroes failed to stop Sylar, but his threat seemed diminished and the new problem, preventing some kind of virus, was less interesting in comparison. Claire Bennet’s plotline was a total waste, making her obsessed with a bland love interest who could fly. There were new characters that failed to measure up to the originals, like…a woman from Mexico who cried black goo. From what I remember, that was all she did. That was her power, crying black goo.
From this point plots were randomly introduced and abandoned. Character motivations shifted depending on the episode and who was writing. The show became a complete mess with no central direction, and the appeal was lost. Also Kristen Bell is in there somewhere as a girl named Elle with lightning powers. Not even she could save it.
Kring was given one last chance with the 2015 revival Heroes Reborn. I turned in to see if it was any better. Nope. We have serious doubts that, should he be given yet another chance at this, he would be able to recreate the magic of Season 1 again.
