She-Hulk Showrunner Apologizes For Lack Of Madisynn In Finale
No one can truly predict if a show will catch on, and if it does, what people will like and dislike about it. Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, which wrapped its first season last week, had many eccentric characters, but perhaps none wilder than the stumbling, heavily vocally fried Madisynn King, subject of Episode 4. Despite appearing in just one episode, Madisynn became the most talked-about and memed element of the series. Jameela Jamil’s Titania appeared far more often and wasn’t nearly as popular despite being Jameela Jamil.
So a lot of people assumed Madisynn would be making a return appearance in last week’s finale….people that kind of had no idea how streaming TV works. Unlike a network show, typically all episodes of a streaming season are completed before the show is given a premiere date. At the point where Madisynn made her debut, everything else about the season had been set in stone and there was no way to react to audience demand. ..But it’s actually worse than that.
Showrunner Jessica Gao revealed to TV Line that in the case of She-Hulk, the finale episode was the first one filmed. She didn’t explain why, but also said all the scripts had been written at that point and Madisynn hadn’t even been cast — there was simply no way for her to show up. Gao would regret this when she saw Patty Guggenheim perform as the character.
““It wasn’t until Patty was cast and we saw her work that we were like, ‘Ohhh, this is going to be a breakout character…If I had known it was Patty Guggenheim from the beginning, she absolutely would have been in not just the finale, but more episodes,” Gao confessed.
So….Madisynn isn’t where you thiiiiiiiiiiiiiink. But might she return in Season 2, assuming there is one? It’s very likely.
