Queen Mantis – K-Drama Adapted from a French drama “La Mante”

“Queen Mantis” is a 2025 Korean drama, 8 episodes, categorized as Police Procedural, Thriller, Suspense, Crime, and Mystery; and streaming on Netflix and Viki. Adapted from the 2017 French drama “La Mante”.

  • Memorable Quote: “You think you know what I did. But you never knew why.”

SUMMARY: A copycat serial killer is on the loose, and the police request help from a serial killer nicknamed Mantis, who is in prison serving her time.

♦ Mother! Even Though I Loath You, I Need Your Help

In “Queen Mantis”, Jeong I-Shin brutally murdered 5 men 20 years ago. She was notorious and given the nickname Mantis. Some species of mantis practice sexual cannibalism, where the female may eat the male after mating. Law enforcement brought her to justice, and she is serving time in prison on death row. But now there’s a serial killer on the loose who is a copycat killer. The police investigator, Cha Su-Yeol (her son), needs her help solving the crime. For years, he despised his mother. It’s not easy for him to face her, let alone ask for her help. But the similarity between the killings his mother went to prison for and the murders being committed can not be overlooked.

Obviously, the killer can’t be his mother. However, perhaps she could offer some insight into the killer’s mind. Cha Su-Yeol’s colleagues compelled him to work on this case. He has been estranged from his mother. Even though he wrestles with personal trauma and an emotional burden, he resolves to perform his duties as a detective, i.e., remain objective, and follow the evidence. His mother is like any mother. She’s happy to see her son, no matter what the circumstances.

Wait, so you're telling me this is the new drama of the year? A serial killer helping the police? Sounds like a wild ride! But is it actually good or just another case of "let's throw a famous actor in a thriller and call it a day"? Somebody convince me before I waste 16 hours of my life! 😂

The dynamic between Jeong I-Shin and her son Cha Su-Yeol is both disturbing and fascinating. I felt the conflict between personal feelings and professional duty very strongly. It is unusual to see a story explore a son relying on a mother who is a convicted serial killer, and yet it is believable in the way the writers handled it. Ko Hyun-Jung’s acting is outstanding; her portrayal of I-Shin is cold yet strangely magnetic. I also liked that the series kept the story compact with only eight episodes, which made it more intense. The suspense builds steadily, and I never felt like it dragged. Overall, this drama is an interesting study of psychology and morality.

I have seen “La Mante,” and comparing it to the Korean adaptation is fascinating. The adaptation respects the original premise but adds more emotional depth, especially with the mother-son relationship. Korean dramas often do well in adding character emotion to crime stories, and this is no exception. I found the investigation scenes realistic, and the use of suspense is clever. The only minor downside is that the ending felt slightly predictable, but the performances kept me engaged throughout. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with strong character focus, this is worth watching.
