My Man Is Cupid ~ A Fairy Connects Lovers with a Red Thread

My Man is Cupid” is a Korean drama series that creates a love story using the Western myth about Cupid, the god of love, as its central character. Cupid is the god of love who connects lovers by shooting his arrow at them. The arrow does not kill them; it makes them fall in love.

The K-drama series is an Amazon Original, released in 2023-2024, with 16 episodes, categorized as Romance, Comedy (Rom-Com), and Fantasy.

‌♦ The Woman With No Red Thread

In “My Man is Cupid”, Cheon Sang-Hyuk (played by Jang Dong-Yoon), has been a fairy for 500 years; since the time of Joseon. He was cursed so he lost his wings. But he still has the power to connect lovers. How does he know who the lovers are? It’s easy. There is a red thread and if he sees the red thread, all he has to do is shoot them!

Oh Baek-Ryeon (played by Nana) is considered by many to be one of the prettiest women in the world. Oh Baek-Ryeon thinks Cupid is a jerk. She has a good reason for thinking that way. The only thing she wants is to be loved. But ever since she was young, every time a male friend declared his love for her, something terrible would happen to him.

She visited a fortune-teller to ask why and he told her that she had done something wrong in her previous life. Then he told her what she needed to do so that she would no longer be punished. After following his instructions, she would meet a man she could fall in love with and he would not get hurt. Her best friend told her the shaman was a fraud. But Oh Baek-Ryeon is so desperate she follows his instructions.

Oh Baek-Ryeon and Cheon Sang-Hyuk encounter each other on different occasions. One time they were both at a museum exhibition about Cupid. That was when Cheon Sang-Hyuk noticed that she did not have a red thread. He became curious about her so he kept following her around.

It so happens someone else was also following her. But that person had evil intentions. The man tried to attack her but Cheon Sang-Hyuk stepped up to defend her. He saved Oh Baek-Ryeon, but the attacker escaped. Cheon Sang-Hyuk was not injured or harmed in any way. Oh Baek-Ryeon was shocked! Could this be the man for her?

But Cheon Sang-Hyuk was not following her because he was romantically interested in her. He just wanted to know why she didn’t have a red thread.

Two Unidentified Witnesses

Seo Jae-Hee (played by Park Ki-Woong) is a police detective working on a murder case. Two witnesses came forward and they both died on the same day. That can’t be a coincidence. But two more witnesses have not been identified and he is searching for them.

Cheon Sang-Hyuk was picked up on a CCTV but his face was not clear enough to see. The police detective was able to track him but the people would not cooperate and give them information about him. All they said was that he was not the kind of person who would kill.

Oh Baek-Ryeon was also picked up on a CCTV but her face was not clear enough to see. She is a veterinarian who runs an animal hospital. Seo Jae-Hee did not know she was the witness he was searching for. A fellow officer was killed in a car accident and the dog was taken to the hospital. He went to find out about the dog, for the sake of his friend. That’s how he met Oh Baek-Ryeon and since she is pretty, he was smitten and wanted to get to know her better.

Coincidentally, Cheon Sang-Hyuk was also at the animal hospital with a dog that needed treatment and even though Seo Jae-Hee saw him there, he did not realize Cheon Sang-Hyuk is the unidentified witness that he was looking for.

So the two unidentified witnesses he needs to question for help solving the murder case are both right in front of him, but he doesn’t know it … yet.

There is a thread that connects all three (3) of them, albeit not a red thread. They are connected from their past lives.

  • Will Cheon Sang-Hyuk ever get his wings back?
  • Will Oh Baek-Ryeon finally find a true love that won’t get hurt?
  • Will Cheon Sang-Hyuk and Oh Baek-Ryeon provide information to help Seo Jae-Hee solve the murder?

The last question and this one is the most important:

Main Characters:

Where to Watch

Rating:

My personal rating is the same as the Amazon viewers. SCMP described this series as “light and fluffy”. That’s a perfect description. Do you want to know what love is? Watch “My Man is Cupid”. If I were rating it just for sweet likable characters it would get 100 stars.

Oh, Baek-Ryeon's skepticism about Cupid cracks me up! I mean, who wouldn't be skeptical when every admirer ends up in trouble? It adds a unique twist to the classic love story. Can't wait to see if Cupid can prove her wrong or if she'll forever be the love-hating beauty.

Hold up, there's a dog in this drama? I'm sold! Animal hospitals, dogs, and mysterious connections - this drama has all the elements I need. I'm more invested in the dog's fate than the murder mystery. Who knew a four-legged friend could steal the spotlight in a romantic fantasy?

This K-drama is a visual feast! The museum scene where Sang-Hyuk notices Baek-Ryeon's missing red thread is pure cinematic brilliance. The symbolism of Cupid's arrow, the lack of a red thread – it's like poetry in motion. And the mystery unfolding concurrently? It's not just a drama; it's a visual masterpiece that keeps you on the edge of your seat, eagerly awaiting the next frame.

hmmm The story revolves around Cupid, the deity of love, which makes the scenario sound exciting. It appears from what you have said that Oh Baek-Ryeon, the main character, encounters difficult circumstances while looking for love. It would be intriguing to observe how Cheon Sang-Hyuk approaches his goal of uniting lovers and whether or not he is able to assist Oh Baek-Ryeon in discovering genuine lov

The deep and enjoyable symbolism in this drama includes the red thread and Cupid's arrow. The red thread that Baek-Ryeon is missing represents a hole in her life and her desire for love. Deciphering this absence becomes a metaphor for Sang-Hyuk's journey to comprehend the intricacies of human connection. It's a metaphorical voyage through the fabric of fate and love, not merely a play.

So, "My Man is Cupid" didn't exactly hit my radar until I stumbled upon it on Prime Video. The lack of promotion had me questioning its potential, but after watching the first few episodes, I'm pleasantly surprised. I mean, come on, NANA is in it! The storyline has this quirky blend of romance, fantasy, and detective work that keeps me intrigued. Maybe hidden gems are just that—hidden.

Episode one had me raising an eyebrow at the exaggerated task of repenting a thousand times. Really? But as the series progresses, the intricate connections between characters and the incorporation of a detective case have me intrigued. It's like a K-drama cocktail with a twist. However, the limited exposure on Prime Video is a shame; this show deserves a broader audience.

NANA's beauty is just too much to handle in every episode—I can't be the only one thinking this. The storyline is intriguing, and the weekly release schedule makes it the perfect weekend binge. Still, putting it exclusively on Prime Video feels like a crime against humanity. We need more people appreciating the goddess that is NANA!
