Uh-oh….Netflix caught wind of Amazon’s billion-dollar plans for Lord of the Rings and became jealous. Jealousy is not a Christian virtue, but that didn’t stop them from snatching up the full rights to CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia for a full-fledged fantasy counterassault. We’ll see who’s more powerful…Sauron or Aslan!

While The Chronicles of Narnia has been adapted into motion picture form multiple times, it’s never gotten far enough to adapt all seven books. When LOTR mania struck during the height of Jackson’s trilogy, Walden Media’s Narnia adaption sputtered out after three films, not even reaching the halfway point.

With Netflix’s spend-happy mentality, as well as their willingness to greenlight everything, Chronicles of Narnia may finally have a shot at getting a complete adaption. There could even be more. The announcement mentions not just movies, but TV series spinoffs set within the Narnia universe.

“C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” says Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

Netflix’s Narnia project is only just now underway, and whatever will be released first has yet to be revealed.
