RetroBro Gaming Entertainment, creators of the recent NES Metroidvanua Aethos, have turned their attention from a Metroid homage to a Mario homage…with liberal amounts of Monster Party sprinkled throughout. It’s Hobo Aldo’s Halloween Adventure, brewed to play on the original NES but also built for PC. The Kickstarter campaign is live now.
Hobo Aldo lost everything one year ago in a scandal that earned him the mockery of the townspeople. But one fateful Halloween night, the mayor of Hillcrest Pines was kidnapped…and Aldo became the only one who could save him. He must do this by hopping and bopping through four separate worlds, each multiple levels long, defeating dozens of classic Halloween monsters along the way and collecting candy to replenish his health.
Gameplay is VERY reminiscent of Mario, featuring trash cans you can warp into like pipes, skeletons you can hop on and bounce on like Koopa shells, and breakable floating bricks everywhere in the neighborhood. These things are not part of the NESMaker engine the game was built upon, and had to be coded by hand. A demo is available on the Kickstarter page so you can try it all out.

- Jump across classic NES platforming challenges
- Defeat witches, skeletons, raccoons and creepy Halloween monsters
- Collect candy to restore your health
- Discover hidden secrets and bonus items
- Transform into powerful Nosferatu mode
- Battle giant bosses
- Explore four unique Halloween worlds with a total of 13 levels!
The cheapest way to play Hobo Aldo’s Halloween Adventure is through the digital tier at $12 — that gets you the ROM of the game, the PC version, a digital manual and a digital poster. The”Candy Hunter” tier grants you the physical cart with no frills at $40 (plus shipping). Upgrading to “Trick Or Treater” for $60 means you get the box and manual too. And since a stretch goal has already been met, all physical backers get an exclusive Collector Trading Card at no additional cost.
Hobo Aldo’s Halloween Adventure will run its campaign until September 3. Since the game is already complete, delivery before Halloween is fully possible.
