There’s A Lethal Wedding Coming To Sega Genesis

Famed retro developer Mega Cat Studios announced their Sega Genesis shooter Lethal Wedding years ago. It sounded pretty cool then and still does today, the day they chose to finally launch the Kickstarter campaign.

It was to be her wedding day…or so she thought. Hours before the knot could be tied, a vicious gang of clowns (we mean literal clowns, in facepaint and giant red noses) burst into the chapel and kidnapped the groom away! Unfortunately for them the bride is the pistol=packing kind, and she owns a lot more weapons where that came from! Two players control Joanna (the bride) and Shelly (the Mother-In-Law) as they blow away an army of circus freaks on a mission to save the blessed day!

Note: I hope there isn’t one of those twists coming where the groom is evil, planned the whole thing and arranged his own kidnapping. That has been done too many times. Guess we’ll see.

Presentation is as over the top as possible and weapons include the Sawed Off Shotgun, the Magnum, the Gun of Roses, the Banana SMG (yes, it shoots bananas) and even a gun that spits out bunnies. (DEADLY bunnies!) Pick up wedding cakes to heal damage and ammo crates to reload.

The cheapest way to get Lethal Wedding is the digital tier at $20 which includes the ROM, the manual, the soundtrack and a poster in digital form. You can get the Genesis cart for $50 (or $45 if you catch the Early Bird) or the cart with box and manual for $50. Additional items like stickers, posters and enamel pins are part of higher tiers.

The concept of Lethal Wedding sounds intriguing, especially for a retro shooter on the Genesis. Mega Cat Studios has a knack for revitalizing classic gameplay mechanics while injecting fresh ideas. I'm curious about how they’ll balance the chaotic nature of a wedding setting with the shooter elements. Given their previous titles, I'm hoping for some clever level design that encourages exploration alongside the action.

When it releases, do you think they’ll incorporate any unique mechanics that play on the wedding theme? Maybe some interesting power-ups related to wedding traditions? It could add an extra layer to the experience.

The moment I read "mother-in-law with guns" I was interested. Most games would just make the bride the hero, but adding Shelly as a playable character makes it a lot funnier. Two-player co-op sounds like where this game will really shine. My brother and I still play old Genesis games sometimes, and this looks like the kind of thing we could finish in one weekend while laughing at how crazy everything is.

I like retro games, but I think $20 for a digital ROM is a little higher than I expected. The game looks fun, and I understand that small studios need support, but I usually wait until I see more gameplay before backing something. The concept is definitely creative though. Clowns as enemies already make it stand out from most shooters. Hopefully the campaign does well because it seems like the developers put a lot of effort into it.

I hope the gameplay is as good as the premise because the premise is carrying a lot of weight here. The story sounds entertaining, but shooters live or die based on controls and level design. If they can make the action feel smooth and keep introducing new weapons and enemy types, I could see this becoming one of those retro games people keep talking about years later.
