8-Bit Sci-fi Metroidvania Aethos Now On Kickstarter

Retrobro Gaming Entertainment, creators of last year’s NES light gun shooter Mavericks: Baghdad Extraction, have returned with a second new experience for the console: Aethos. The Kickstarter campaign for the game is now live.

The story goes that humanity, having ruined their own world, is seeking out others, but only a robot could survive the trip, at least for now. Kyra, an autonomous synthetic AI, piloted the mothership Elysium to the planet of Aethos, ten light years away. All was going well until a sudden energy surge topped Elysium and sent it hurtling toward Aethos. One crash landing later, Kyra’s new mission is to repair her ship, and also to simply survive.

Gameplay is much like exploring in a Metroid game. Kyra starts out with basic abilities, but can uncover upgrades through exploring and defeating boss monsters. These upgrades will grant new powers that let her access areas she couldn’t before — you know how this works. But even a fully powered Kyra has to watch her resources carefully, because each power can only be used for a certain period of time.

  • Boost Thrusters – Regain full mobility and zip across hazardous terrain.
  • Plasma Blaster – Fire rapid energy bolts to fend off hostile lifeforms.
  • Phase Shift – Slip between dimensions to bypass barriers and threats.
  • Cryo Cannon – Freeze enemies and convert them into temporary platforms. Or stop them in their tracks to inflict damage while frozen.
  • Charged Mega Shot – Consume energy to unleash a devastating, charged blast.
  • Teleport System – Instantly warp back to your jump ship to travel between sectors or return to Elysium for safety.
  • Duplicator – A rare upgrade found beyond the third dimension, doubles Kyra’s base damage output.

The cheapest way to play Aethos is the Digital Edition which takes a $12 pledge. The cheapest physical version is the box-less NES cartridge (which comes with the digital rewards) for a $40 pledge. The box and manual can be added for a $60 pledge, but if you want the royal treatment, the highest tier at $99 grants you alternate box and cartridge art, a 11×17 poster, the full soundtrack on CD, and a 4″ wood pixelated figurine by craftsman Jeffrey Wittenhagen.

You’ve got a few weeks to get your ticket to Aethos — the campaign wraps up on March 5.

This looks exactly like the kind of Metroidvania I’ve been waiting for on actual NES hardware. The time-limited powers thing adds real tension instead of just collecting stuff forever. Kyra’s story feels classic but fresh with the robot survivor angle. Already pledged the $40 cart tier because I collect physical NES games and this one seems worth it. Hope they hit stretch goals for extra bosses or something. Solid pitch.

$12 for digital is a steal for a new NES game in 2026. Love that they kept the retro limits but added smart mechanics like limited-use upgrades. Phase Shift and Cryo Cannon sound fun to chain together. Reminds me of playing original Metroid as a kid but with better ideas. Retrobro knows what they’re doing after Mavericks. Backed it yesterday, no regrets.

The concept is cool, robot fixing her ship on an alien planet, but $60+ for a boxed copy feels high when most people just emulate anyway. Gameplay seems standard Metroid clone with a timer twist on abilities which might get annoying fast. Still, props for making new stuff for real NES. I’ll wait for reviews before jumping in, but the art is nice.

Another Kickstarter NES game? Count me in. The crash landing setup is simple but works. Boost Thrusters and Teleport sound perfect for exploration. Resource management on top of Metroid formula is smart. Physical editions look clean too. Pledged digital for now, might upgrade later if they add more content. Good luck to the team.

This game has way too many upgrades listed like it’s trying to impress everyone. Time limits on powers could make it frustrating instead of challenging. Story is basic sci-fi stuff we’ve seen before. $99 for extras is crazy expensive for what’s basically a homebrew. I’ll pass unless it gets amazing feedback after release.

Kyra as the protagonist is a nice change from human characters. The planet Aethos setting with ruined humanity backstory gives it some weight. Cryo Cannon turning enemies into platforms is genius. Already backed the $60 boxed version because I want the manual and full package. Retrobro’s style is consistent and I trust them after last game.

This is the NES game we need right now. Exploration, upgrades, survival elements all in one. Phase Shift for dodging barriers and Cryo for platforms? That’s creative. Retrobro clearly put thought into mechanics that fit the hardware limits. Went for the $99 tier because the poster and figurine are cool bonuses. Campaign has my support, let’s make this happen.
