Godzilla Meets Pirates In IDW’s Here There Be Dragons
The question of how long Godzilla has been around depends on what canon we’re accepting. Originally he was the product of atomic radiation, which means he could not have existed in the 1500s — but in IDW’s upcoming miniseries he is much older, which allows him to be encountered by old-school, peg-legged, yarrrr-ing pirates. That’s the premise behind Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons.
Long ago the sailor and explorer Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe via the high seas and encountered many dangers, among them Godzilla apparently. Drake was a real person but nothing else about this story is real, concocting a legend where he winds up on an ancient island frequented by pirates, but guarded by a gigantic lizard. The comic was cooked up by author Frank Tieri and artist Inaki Miranda, the creative team behind DC’s Old Lady Harley.
“What could be cooler than a Godzilla tale with pirates?” says Tieri. “Here There Be Dragons is a lost voyage of Sir Francis Drake, told through the eyes of a crewman facing execution. The question is, is he telling the truth? Is there really a conspiracy to cover up what happened to Drake on that island and the existence of Godzilla? Or is this merely another pirate’s tall tale? Avast, ye Godzilla fans, and batten down the hatches at your local comic book shop!”
The first issue of Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons will arrive at a port near you this June.
