Rogue One had a massive debut at the box officer this weekend, be sure to read our review, and made $150 million dollars in the US alone. Add that to the critical and fan praise, and this film was a hit all around.
One of the things that people are talking about most though, are the cameos, and the ending.
MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
At the end of Rogue One, specifically at the final battle, every member of the Rogue One team, including main character Jyn Erso, was killed in one form or another. While this makes sense in a way, as none of these characters existed in canon before the film, it did raise eyebrows, as few movies ever go this route.
Director Gareth Edwards revealed to Empire Podcast, as noted by Heroic Hollywood, that there was a version in which they lived, and it was for a very believable reason:
“I think there was an early version – the very first version they didn’t [die] in the screenplay,” he noted, with the reason being that they didn’t think Disney/Lucasfilm wouldn’t approve of such a plan, “So we’re trying to figure out how this ends where that doesn’t happen,” Edwards explained. “And then everyone read that, and there was just this feeling of like, ‘They gotta die right?’ And everyone was like, ‘Yeah, can we?.'”
Well, it appears they gave the greenlight, as the ending was kept, and many feel it was better because of it.
