Seems Like The Next Attempt At Star Wars Episode X Is Coming From Jon Watts

It may seem like Disney has oversaturated Star Wars ever since they took ownership of it, but actually, it could be worse. For every project that makes it out, there are at least three that don’t. Many Star Wars movie ideas have been tinkered with and abandoned behind the scenes over the last ten years, most commonly attempts at continuing the mainline series past Episode IX, Rise Of Skywalker.

Several directors have been announced as helming a new trilogy, going back to 2018 with an eventually nonexistent three films announced from Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. They’ve knocked on doors owned by Patty Jenkins, Guillermo del Toro, that Kevin Feige guy (come on, BOTH franchises?) and Rian Johnson (again). The latest one to get the summoning, according to THR, is Jon Watts.

Now if you don’t know who that is then you haven’t been paying attention to the main titles on the latest Spider-Man movies. He directed the “Homecoming” trilogy and already has some distant galaxy experience: he came up with that “Skeleton Crew” show. Lucasfilm has yet to formally commit to whatever Watts has in mind for a new trilogy (as usual), but should they through some miracle finally agree to finalize something, Watts would share duties with script writer Simon Kinberg, who co-created Star Wars Rebels.

You might catch onto a theme between these two: they’ve both worked on lighter renditions of longtime franchises and have deliberately targeted family audiences. That might hint at the direction Disney might want Star Wars to drift next. Unless, of course, they can these two and look for someone else again.

Currently, the only guaranteed Star Wars movie on the slate after Mandalorian And Grogu is Star Wars Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. The movie releases in theaters May 27, 2027.

Jon Watts has an interesting style, especially with the recent Spider-Man films, but I can't help but feel skeptical about what they'll do with Episode X. The risk of oversaturation is real, and while there's potential for fresh takes, it seems like they might be chasing nostalgia without really adding anything meaningful. The original trilogy had such a distinct feel; I wonder if they can recapture any of that magic.
