Your top 10 favorite songs

Been meaning to post this, but never could find the time...

We've all listened to music (at least I hope so). Could you narrow the list of your favorite songs to just the top 10 favorites? What are the songs that that are most meaningful to you? What are the songs you could listen to endlessly without getting tried of?

I ask this because, not too long ago. I engaged in a little event with some of my family members. We each burned a CD of our top 10 favorite songs of all time. And while many songs fought for my top ten places, here is my final list (In no particular order because I try not to keep favorites)...

01. RIDER CHIPS FT. FUJIOKA HIROSHI - Let's Go!! Rider Kick ~2000 Ver.~
02. RICHARD JACQUES FT. T.J. DAVIS - Can You Feel The Sunshine?
03. VAN HALEN - Dreams
04. ENDOH MASAAKI - Bakuryu Sentai AbaRanger
05. WEIRD AL YANKOVIC - Everything You Know Is Wrong
06. DAFT PUNK - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
07. THE BEATLES - Helter Skelter
08. OHGURO MAKI - Anything Goes!
09. TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTA - The Moment
10. WADA KOUJI - Butter-Fly

And the reasons why these songs made my top ten...

[HIDE]01) This song represents the height of my collection in Japanese music. I actually bought the single for this song back when it wasn't as widely available on the net as it is now. I even bought other things, such as live performance albums and even the single with Rider Chips & mcAT's version of Kamen Rider no Uta. But this song and the single it comes from represents the height of my collection and my love for tokusatsu, especially Kamen Rider. And currently, I am becoming afraid of the version that we're getting for the OOO, Den-O, and All Riders movie...

02) This is a song from Sonic R. Make all the evil Tails Doll jokes you want, but I always loved the Sonic games, I loved the music from this game, and I loved Sonic R. It is one of the very few racing games I actually enjoy. But even so, I love the lyrical message in this song. Yes, I do love sunny days, and I love days where I can just be free to enjoy the simplicity of life.

03) Probably one of the only songs I took away from Power Rangers that stands well on its own. I chose this song because it is inspiring and it is rock and roll. I have a soft spot for rock songs with inspiring, spirit-lifting lyrics. And this is one that always comes back to me. I have a deep fondness for this song.

04) This is one of my all time favorite Sentai series. It was the series that got me hooked into Super Sentai. I had always known about Super Sentai since my days of youth on the internet, but never explored it. But after seeing how badly Dino Thunder turned out, I just KNEW AbaRanger had to be better. And it so was! And how can you NOT love that kicking orchestra rock score? So awesome! I personally think all Super Sentai is superior to Power Rangers, but that's just me. But had my family engaged in this Top 10 thing at a later time, this song might have been replaced with something else... (More on this later...)

05) Ah, Weird Al... I love his material, but this song REALLY speaks to me. It is both a representation of just how deeply I think and reflect on things sometimes, but it also represents the sense of humor I have and the kind of humor I like. Everything may be wrong, but putting this song on my list was right.

06) Okay, before you shoot me, it's not THIS song I love so much, it's the artist and just about everything they've done. Anyone ever see that segment on Toonami in America where they had a special showcasing animated music videos? Daft Punk (as well as Gorillaz to a lesser extent) came into my life at a time when I really needed more music and wanted to expand my library, but had no good outlets to turn to.

07) Please try to refrain from any Charles Manson. My best friend, when we were young, introduced me to the world of rock through The Beatles. He introduced me to this one as well as the rest of their discography, and I gotta say, this song rocks the hardest of anything they've ever done. I love The Beatles and I love this song!

08) Okay, go ahead. Call me fickle. Call me one sided. Say that I don't have any taste. But I love this little piece of ska. It's awesome! Yes, I love it because it's the theme song of the current Kamen Rider that is on the air, but that just shows how much I love tokusatsu. Had I made this list last year, W-B-X would be on this list instead. Heck, if the event had happened later in the year when we did it (Goseiger was still on the air at the time), then I might have replaced the AbaRanger theme song with the one from Shinkenger or even Gokaiger, which I am falling deeper and deeper in love with.

09) This one is just pure sentimentalism. To me and my Christian upbringing, life is precious. Life is something that should be cherished, something that we should make the most of. This song really speaks to me and those beliefs I have. When I'm feeling sentimental about that kind of thing, I always go back to this song. It's a small song, but a powerful one none the less.

10) Ah, the theme song from Digimon Adventure... My girlfriend turned me on to Digimon. Something about this song just reminds about the innocence and wonder of discovering the world as a child, and I think Digimon does showcase this a little bit. And it doesn't hurt that this song rocks! The only reason why this song was last on my list is because I wanted to end the CD on a rockin' note.[/HIDE]

So that's it. That's my top 10 and the reasons why I like them, but it was not easy. I could have EASILY gone on to make a top 20, 50, 100, or more! And even so, there is still billions of worlds of music I have yet to explore.

...So, what's your top 10 and why?

1. A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater
ACOS was my first foray into the world of Prog rock epics. Technically it's incredible with its time signature changes, vast array of lengthy solo sections and varying musical styles. The lyrics are easy to relate to and are extremely touching.

2. Heart of the Sunrise by Yes
To be honest, I have very little idea of what this song is actually about, but it is quite beautiful. Musically it is quite impressive, and I'd say it was even more so back when it was released. Early prog at its best.

3. 2112 by Rush
This was one of the first Rush songs I ever listened to. It was just as I was getting into more musician oriented music, and it sticks with me to this day. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for producing these guys, Toronto.

4. Learning to Live by Dream Theater
With lyrics penned by their bassist, John Myung, this is one of the most beautiful Dream Theater songs you can find. The lyrics are quite poetic if not confusing. It takes a bit of studying to realize what he's talking about, but that's not the important part. The music takes you on a journey. It may not be one of their longer songs, clocking in at just over 11 minutes, but hot damn it's one of their best.

5. Echos by Pink Floyd
Most people have heard The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon, but Meddle is where they really hit their stride. The album where they were feeling around and finding what would soon lead to Dark Side of the Moon. Echos is psychedelic rock at its best. The lyrics paint a wonderful landscape and the music truly takes you there. Brilliant.

6. Master of Puppets by Metallica
This is the song that got me into metal. It's the song that got me into music. Say what you want about Metallica, but this song is motherfucking important to me. I don't listen to it all that often, but for a bunch of guys with no formal music knowledge, it's fucking brilliant. Thrash motherfucker, can you dig it?

7. At the Heart of Winter by Immortal
I was a bit hesitant to put a black metal song in my top 10, but I felt compelled to by this song. Immortal are one of the better black metal bands because their guitars and drums are actually good. The lyrics are cheesy as all get out, but it works! They take you to a cold place and leave you there. Great stuff.

8. White Pearl, Black Oceans... by Sonata Arctica
Sonata really know how to tell you a story. The lyrics are great, as they talk all about a man whose life is ruined by pursuing a romantic relationship (this causes a bunch of people to die). It's great stuff musically too.

9. Martius-Nauticus II by Pain of Salvation
This track is the epic ending to 'BE' PoS's ambitious concept album about God on a quest to find out who and what he is. Lyrically it's wonderful. God has decided man is not worth saving, as we refuse to save ourselves. Then he decides he will start over, knowing he can be whatever he wants. Musically it's absolutely brilliant. Odd time signatures, varying musical styles, and it incorporates bits and pieces of the previous songs in the album. I cannot gush over the musical awesomeness this song (and album) oozes.

10. Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel) by Kansas
Sure, it's not Carry on Wayward Son or Dust in the Wind so a lot of people have not heard it, but they should! Lyrically it's just a modern interpretation of the story of Icarus, but it's still nice. Musically it's pretty good, as are all Kansas songs. However, it's got this awesome groove that many a song cannot have. All the artists in this band mesh so well to create such a nice overall piece. I love it so much. (and it sounds awesome live).

God, that was tough. Most of these songs could easily shift from being #1 to being #10 without much thought, so they're in no particular order. They all have so much value to me.
