Why wasn't Ryuki as popular as Madoka got?

Four endings counting the second 13 Riders ending. I can understand the show's ending being divisive, but what was wrong with Episode Final and 13 Riders?

I dunno, I personally feel that "Episode Final" is the best one (amusingly, my younger sister doesn't like the "Shinji breaks the mirror" ending since she says he screams too much.)

In the Episode Final ending, Kanzaki kind of just... stops trying. Why? Can't he do another reset? I'm guessing the movie came out before it was revealed that he can always get another Odin, but it's still underwhelming. At least in the TV ending, he clearly accepts that his sister isn't going to live.

Also, the middle portion of the show was a bit meandering. Like, they weren't sure how to advance the plot, so they just had the characters do pointless stuff. Like that time the Ore Journal girls got kidnapped by a Mirror Monster.

As for popularity, I heard in Igadevil's podcast that Ryuki did get attention from non-KR fans, but I don't know to what extent.

The movie came out around the time Odin appeared in the tv show. Anyway, I don't think there's anything stopping him from reseting time after the movie was done.

In the tv show, he was clearly pretty desperate in some scenes involving Yui at the end, and in the movie he sees Yui killing herself just to antagonize him, that must hurt, so his reaction isn't really out of character.

Besides, the movie does end with that scene in the past.

Magical girl anime is much more popular than Tokusatsu henshin hero now. If Toei do a Kamen Rider X Super Sentai X Pretty Cure crossover, I'm pretty sure that it's going to be a hit. The fact that there's many Yuri in Madoka also help. Also, Ryuki have more similarity in premise with Mirai Nikki or Fate/Stay Night, which is also a lot more popular than Ryuki.

As for Ryuki's ending, I actually like all of them, even the SIC Hero Saga endings. The ending for Episode Final actually make sense for me, remember that in the last scene of the movie there's still two Riders remaining, meaning that Odin is still there since the only way to kill him for real is in the final of Rider Fight. In in the TV Series, Shinji and Ren know that Odin is still "alive" at the end of the series, Kanzaki pretty much hide the fact that he have a lot of Odin. And judging from the ending credit, Odin/Kanzaki pretty much Time Vent everything again.

My only gripe with the TV Series is that they killed Verde, Femme, and Ryuga off-screen. It just kinda weird that during the last arc, Kanzaki just said that Shinji, Ren, Kitaoka, and Asakura as the only surviving Riders (Technically, Odin too) while we never see the last three Riders.

I think one of the reasons might be the fact that Madoka, unlike Ryuki, broke outside of the norm.

Back in the day Ryuki was controversial because of its radical approach to the Kamen Rider Formula, but even then it was a Tokusatsu show through and through. Madoka on the other hand became famous for being a subversion of the Magical Girl genre. That fact alone puts Madoka in an entirely different league than Ryuki.

There is also the aspect of target demographics and time slot; Madoka was aimed at an adult audience during a late night timeslot, this particular demographic tends to be far more vocal than the audience who watches Kamen Rider every sunday at 8 AM, who is mostly children.

And even if you look at it from an international perspective, Tokusatsu is far more niche than anime is, so it is natural that far more people know about Madoka than Ryuki, not to mention that since it aired 10 years ago (an age that predates the Boom of toku), Ryuki is a relatively obscure show outside of the fandom.

Add to that the fact that it is easier for the masses to accept a 12 episode Magical Girl show than 50 episode show from a genre they only comprehend if you utter the words "Power Rangers".

As for the quality of the shows themselves, Madoka is definetily better made, and that has a lot to do with the format; it only has 12 episodes so the writing is more consistent, there is no filler, there are far less characters to develop and the show is not tied to the monster of the week formula or to the Quarter plot developments. As a result, i can say that even if both shows have some glaring similarities and play with similar ideas, Madoka is an overall better show, even if i do prefer Ryuki on a personal level.

I like Ryuki. After all, this and Kiva are things, that made me a Kamen Rider fun. Also, I heard, that Ryuki was a real blast in Toku fandom, when it was airing.

I agree that Yui is awfull, fights are not that good (just.. where have you seen good fights in KR? Well, in Tokusatsu? Just a few titles like Garo, I guess) and some of actors are just awfull (but just look at main cast: Satoshi Matsuda, Kenzaburo Kikuchi, Tomohisa Yuge, Takashi Hagino, Kanji Tsuda, Hitomi Kurihara even Ryohei and lots of others. Can someone accuse them of poor acting? Suga certainly isn't the best actor ever, but he was decent enough for me) Some guest actors were just bad, but it's not that bad overall. Plot was poor, but it was a bit experiment in KR, so it was more or less enjoyable for me. Ryuki brough a lot of good things to the franchise, it's pointless to deny that.
It's a good Tokusatsu series for me. Not the best, yet good. I prefer to watch Ryuki, than shows like Den-O, Decade, OOO or Fourze.

For whatever its flaws, with shows from that half of the decade including Ryuki, I can at least say that I'm not going every five minutes "This could have been cool, but they screwed it up with this and that". Ryuki is far less aggravating than, say, Wizard, which wants to be Agito and Ryuki combined but can't emulate even one correctly.

This thread's making me want to rewatch Ryuki.

Actually, Madoka is not over yet, 3rd movie is coming out in few months :) But yes, while we did have several anime shows, that had magical girls fight and kill each other for prize, this time, it was because of magical girls mascot, who turn out to be manipulative jerk, i don`t remember any magical girl show pulling that before.
