I've watched way too much C-SPAN than is healthy over the past couple of months that I've been laid off, so I think I have a unique perspective in this since I've watched the house and senate debates. Here are my thoughts. Keep in mind that while I may be generalizing, I am not saying "all" or even "most". But certainly enough for politicians and pundits to influence to their will.
1. Some Americans have a superiority complex. We've been told since birth that we are the greatest country in the world, for various reasons. Many times America is great at humanitarian aid, defending other lands and ours, and creating an environment for pretty much anyone to succeed. However, we tend to try to forget or gloss over some of the really bad things America can do when it suits it's purposes. Some jaded individuals would even say everything America does is for the soul purpose of controlling the rest of the world. There are examples of this, yes, but those are from people that I believe are evil, but justify it through capitalism, etc, and warp what the true foundation of America was all about. Or they take it to it's fullest extent and logical ends. Something to ponder. Hmm...
Now, you can see that if other countries around the world have universal health care, there would be some that would say "well that doesn't mean we have to do it! We're America. We lead, not follow!" In some areas, yes. Most of the world does look to the United States as an example of the best of humanity and opportunity and freedom. But it can take a long time to get there and overcome racial, ethnic, and stereotypical divides. I'm guilty of it myself, so I'm not saint.
2. Some Americans are easily scared.
Other arguments are that it would cost too much. They use codewords like "government takeover" or "gov't run" since the government certainly can't do anything right. Despite the fact that these same politicians are the government that supposedly can't do anything right. I happen to like that I can still mail a letter and it gets somewhere across the country in two days. Or that while I'm looking for a job I can get a meager check to cover some expenses. Or that I can type this rant and not have police show up at the door to "ask me questions."
Some politicians will say things like "we can't even afford Social Security, how can we afford this" and then turn around and say "OMG, they're going to cut Social Security!" whenever someone even mentions doing something different to get off the path of it going off a cliff. So which is it? Do you want the socialist Social Security or not?
I haven't had the toughest life, but it's been far from easy. But no matter what, I'd rather be here than somewhere else. I often wonder how or why I was born in Chicago in this time period and not someplace like Haiti now or South Africa in the 70's or Vietnam in the 60's. Or hell, even in America in the 1800s. Something else to ponder...
My personal view is that the budget should be torn up and started over. And I'm not just talking about Obama's. I'm talking about everything that has been allocated and authorized for centuries and reauthorized and retooled. Just start over from scratch. In my head it shouldn't be that hard, but I know in practice if probably would be. If someone was looking at the budget "line by line" like the President likes to say, then someone would have seen more than a few line items that get passed over or just plain missed because there are so many expenditures and programs that have to be funded for the welfare of the state, or simply funded for the benefit of some schisters that tricked enough people into electing them.
I wouldn't be surprised if the government always runs a deficit because they base the budget on projected revenue, then when the time comes, they either overspend, a disaster happens, or they plain don't bring in as much money as they thought, and the surplus one year can be a deficit the next. However, you have things that still need funding, so you have to spend a little more, and another disaster happens, and the hole gets bigger and bigger.. And because it gets so big, some sneaky pols think “well it’s so big now, no one will notice if I give a company a little bit here and there.â€
