Universal Plans Another Mummy Movie, But Perhaps Not The One You Want

Universal’s always doing something with their Monsters. Lately they’ve been a bit more bold in how they spin them, retooling the Invisible Man into a sociopathic ex and giving us Dracula’s daughter hunting down a gang of unwitting thieves. Now they’re planning to revive The Mummy — yes, again — and this time, it will be even MORE dour than the joyless 2017 Tom Cruise picture. The chosen director is Lee Cronin. Since Cronin was previously behind Evil Dead Rise, a film that turned a horror-comedy franchise into just horror, you might be expecting something similar. You’d be right. “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before,” Cronin said to The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.” So to those who want a “scary” Mummy movie, you may just get it. However…there’s a larger crowd that wants something else and they’re being ignored. I find it bizarre that, in an industry dominated by sequels and wringing every possible dime out of every IP with a tiny bit of life, this studio continues to ignore the fact that they own a successful, iconic Mummy picture that […]

Since it’s a Blumhouse production, I have higher hopes for this Mummy movie. They’ve been doing some interesting things with horror lately. I’m glad they’re going for a darker, more serious tone. That fits their style. I’m interested to see how they handle the mythology of the Mummy. Maybe they'll bring in some new elements or give it a fresh twist. I’m excited to see what Lee Cronin does with it.

I remember seeing the original Mummy movies with Boris Karloff. Those were classic horror films. The Brendan Fraser movies were fun, but they weren’t really scary. This new one sounds like it’s going back to the roots of horror. I’m curious to see how it compares to the older films. I hope it’s not too gory or violent. I prefer a more suspenseful kind of horror.

Thank goodness they're finally moving on from that Tom Cruise Mummy movie. I try to pretend that never happened. It was such a mess. It didn't know what it wanted to be – action, horror, or some weird attempt at setting up a cinematic universe. It just didn't work. It felt like they tried to force it to be something it wasn’t. It’s good that they’re taking a completely different approach this time. I hope this new movie actually understands what makes the Mummy story interesting. It seems like it’s going to be something completely different and that is a good thing. I’m hoping this one will be better.

With Lee Cronin directing, I'm hoping this Mummy movie relies more on practical effects than CGI. Evil Dead Rise had some great practical effects, and it made the horror feel much more visceral. I'm tired of seeing everything done with CGI. It often looks fake and doesn't have the same impact. I'm hoping they create a truly terrifying mummy with makeup and prosthetics. It would be a refreshing change.

I'm really hoping this new Mummy movie has some impressive set design. The ancient Egyptian settings have so much potential for visual storytelling. I'd love to see elaborate tombs, temples, and other ancient structures. It would be great if they incorporated real architectural styles and details. The sets can really enhance the atmosphere and create a sense of authenticity.
