I went and compared the LED's and LCD's at the store to my Plasma at home. Plasma totally kills it.

That was probably something related to the switch in front of the TV. The SDTV lasting longer than HDTV comparison is based on the picture tube. And it also boils down on how it's being used.

I mostly use the TV's remote control to switch it on and off. Anyway my point might still stand. Though what do you mean by the comparison being based on the picture tube?

Same here. Once in awhile I will watch a VHS for the **** of it.

As will I. There's still something nice and nostaglic about it, even though I once I got a DVD player, I never bought anything on VHS again if I could get it on DVD. I'll do the same with Blu-ray if I ever get to have a Blu-ray player, but I won't mind if things I have on DVD might take a while to make it to Blu-ray.

I just got a new TV yesterday, its a 46" 720p plasma. Upgraded from a 27" SDTV. Nothing wrong with the old one but I've had a Blu-ray and a HD-DVD player for over a year now plus I have around 75 blus & 40 HD-DVDs now. I would have have bought one sooner but I spend a good chunk of change on DVDs.

How come you had a Blu-ray and HD-DVD player when you didn't have an HDTV yet? I'll just say that even though I don't have an HDTV, I still considered getting a Blu-ray player once my DVD player died, and that's because Blu-ray players play DVDs as well. I thought I'd be saving myself a lot of money by doing that, for when (or if) I get an HDTV. Anyway, I found a used DVD player on eBay that's the exact same model I had, and just got that instead.

I thought I'd go for an LCD, since I was told by a Best Buy employee that light tends to screw with the plasma screens. He told me he has a plasma, but he watches TV with the lights off anyway. That's not something I'm into, so I figured it would be okay if I go with an LCD TV.

I'm also still trying to decide between a 32 incher or a 37 incher. The 37 inchers are a bit rare, as not many companies manufacture them, but a 32 incher seems standard enough. I figured I could still go for a 32 incher, since my Sony WEGA I talked about was 20 inches. Now I'm working with its replacement, a 25 inch Panasonic standard defintion TV my cousin gave up to me. Once I started watching it, I realized I could have done better than the 20 incher in size all along. The 20 inch TV was still good enough for me, even with the distance from which I sit from my TV (six feet). Thirty-two inch HDTV seems to be the HD TV equivalent of a 20-inch standard definition TV as far as size goes, so perhaps I could get away with a 32 inch HDTV, even though I could get a bigger picture witha 37 incher. I could also go for a 40 incher, but I just want to spend as little money as possible, especially since HDTVs are said to have a short life span.

Now this guy told me I can go too small with an HDTV, but I can never go too big, but I don't think I agree with that. I think a 32-inch HDTV or 37-inch HDTV would suit me just fine.

Of course, I don't care. I was kinda surprised, I viewed bolt as a tv man. Someone who knew a lot of pop culture like others here on HJU.

My parents bought an HD tv for upstairs, although I hardly watch it unless company. Other than that, i just use my oh-so-reliable vacuum tube television that people joke is gonna blow any second. :laugh:

SDTV usually lasts longer because it uses gas to display images. HDTVs use transistors. So, if one of the transistors fail, you'll get a discolored pixel. And yes, we also still have a VHS player, though, we've not used it for a long while now. We've rarely used the DVD player that we have as most of the stuff is available online anyway. I have a PC connected to our Sony WEGA. Regarding BD players, the price is now getting cheaper that it would be a good idea to pick one up if you have a chance. Though, you can get a DVD player for about $20USD, maybe even less. BD players are definitely backwards compatible with DVDs... Just don't use the defunct HDDVDs on it... :laugh:


A 32inch HDTV is a good size. What the person said about HDTV being small is that, if you're putting out the money anyway, why would you go with anything below a 27inch HDTV.. You're just wasting your money. HDTV's main drive is to show off the details and you're going to watch something on a small screen? I believe that's what the premise about that. Yea, i know kinda worries me. I watch a lot of shows/movies with subtitles, (Like alot of people on this board I'm sure) even English speaking films. Been going def for a long time

To be honest i own a lot of DVD's, like 2000 not including the blu's & hddvd's. But for me (an i know it sounds strange) i don't buy blu's for picture/sound quality, I'm really a sucker for extras. If a movie/show comes out on dvd & blu and there is no difference in extra content then I'll most likely buy the dvd (as long as I'm saving money)

The only reason I would ever get an HDTV is to watch anime/tokusatsu in HD or to play games in HD. What's on TVs nowadays is just really...meh...

To compensate, I do have a HD monitor that I do gaming and viewing on so I'm not in a hurry to buy an HDTV.
