Where I Watch Suite Precure Episode 9 What is Kanade Lacking?

Arthur: "Kanade's having some bad dreams about not having her own Berthier weapon. I wonder, do Lanterns have that kind of envy?"

Ryan: "Only the Reds, because they can't do constructs. It seems weird that Siren has a sack full of Notes, but it's not even enough to fill up one page of the Legendary Score."

Wally: "Talking with Hummy isn't improving Kanade's mood, but playing the Ocarina of Re does. She goes off in search of Hibiki's power and winds up helping her cook. Then she tries to mimic how Hibiki operates and winds up overstuffing herself. If you don't have the metabolism to back it up, calorie loading isn't going to help."

Rex: "It happened again. The subtlety of meaning sailed right over Kanade's head twice. When she tries to run with Hibiki, she eventually falls way behind. However, she does make it to the finish line after all. Not half-bad for her first time running that fast."

Wally: "For once, they don't even have a fight, just share a couple silent glances. At least until an explosion downfield signals the arrival of Siren. Negatone of the Day is a Cherry Blossom monster. Despite looking silly, it's still terrifying. All the cherry trees get stripped in a moment and the girls rush to battle."

Arthur: "The Negatone can teleport on the wind, and it manages to bruise Melody's arm, thus rendering her unable to use the Berthier. And when Rhythm complains of letting her down, Melody tells her just how wrong she is."

Dinah:" It takes Kanade a few minutes, but she finally gets the point and her own Fantastic Berthier. And she's so confident at using it that she simply walks out of frame after using the Music Round."

Author commentary: Hells bells, this episode was magnificent. I oversimplified it for the review, but I loved every minute of it. Seeing Hibiki blush brighter and brighter as her mother got involved in her day was buildup to a great payoff.

When Maria shows up to snap people out of the mind control, it was a great scene. And the fact that she gave Melody the same wink she gave Hibiki in the classroom suggests that not only is she aware that her daughter's a superheroine, but that she's totally cool with it.

The one part I didn't touch on in the review was a bit of symmetry. When Kanade asks Hibiki what she'd wish for, she suggests having her mother sing her a lullaby. When they go to the concert hall, Hibiki sings a lullaby to her mother to wake her up from the jet lag, and at the end, Hibiki's father mentions how Maria played lullabies for Hibiki on the violin. And it was that lullaby that she played to calm the townsfolk down.

It's these moments of family love that Precure does awesomely.
