Western Influence on Sentai?

...come to think of it, Shinkenger don't have any dance sequence at the ending like it's past predecessors. From Abaranger to Go-onger. They all had dance sequences at the ending, but not shinkenger. I think Disney had something had some influence in that  Glad it's gone because I always hated those dance sequances

If Aba's ED counts, then Kaku's does too. :P

Definitely would say there is influential drifting between East and West. Most obvious example was an episode in Dino Thunder when we saw them looking at Abaranger, I think on tv - with the DT commenting on "Japanese Power Rangers."

Since they've parted ways, to some you might agree, but I can actually see Sentai being sentai again without any outside influence on whether it's suitable for adaptation...

I'd like to think that, but if Shinkenger and Goseiger are any indication, it's not going to happen anytime soon. They're still using costumes (albeit cool ones) for the boss villains rather than real actors, for one thing. And the action is still rather tame compared to years past. (Though I suppose that can be blamed on CGI-craze and neurotic parents who think the shows are too violent for their virtually non-existent children >.>)

Yet somehow we're still having giant combination mecha (GoseiGreat's gonna be one I predict). Really, merchandising goes over pride now.

We need to start having toku "tea parties" :P

The suits theory may not be that strong. In terms of simple adaptation several things are not used(Mandora Boy), re-tooled (SPD aliens), or used too briefly to matter (Kensai suits, Dekabright). There are furries probably because kids like furries.

Like I said, it could stem from Disney wanting certain things (to make a certain tone) and then canging its mind later on. That doesn't mean it's the only reason, but I think it might be a big one.

I personally see Power Rangers affecting Super Sentai's fandom. I've seen lots of fans unintentionally view Sentai as "Japanese Power Rangers." Lots of fans still haven't quite gotten a hold of how Super Sentai's stories work, and unintentionally watch Sentai through how a Power Rangers season works. I know Super Sentai is quite popular, but it seems like a huge portion of its popularity comes from "Not being able to see Sentai for what it is." Lots of fans just follow Sentai just for the soul purpose of comparing them to Power Ranger seasons and unintentionally view Sentai as just merely "source material, that's better than it's adaptation." Every time I go onto a Zyuranger thread, I always see someone saying "Better than MMPR." This is how I think PR has impacted the toku fandom.

This is one thing I've found annoying about the fandom. A lot of people grew up with PR and then only a few years ago discovered toku. They came in with the mentality that PR is just a kids' show and began watching mostly modern Sentais (since that's what's on, and it's the majority of what's subbed), thinking that this is what Sentai and all toku is. Hence we have too many people with this mindset that toku is just kids' shows to sell toys, and will forgive whatever outrageous thing that may occur in the programs because.... "Well, that's the nature of the beast. Toku is just wacky live-action anime meant to sell toys and entertain little kiddies. We're too old to watch this stuff but do anyway because we're geekly like that. Stop being an old fogie and just go with the flow. Learn to have fun" The problem isn't just with Sentai. The same attitude permeates Rider and the other shows as well. Only stuff like Garo ("Cuz it's sooooooo adult") escapes the defamation.

And for the record, Zyuranger wouldn't even be remembered were it not for MMPR. It's a waste of a brilliant premise, but gets way more credit than it deserves simply because "it's Sentai, and Sentai is dA kEwL! :buttrock:"

I can tell Disney wouldn't allow the Goseigers to show off their angelic wings. :P

To both of you: Hey, for some of us, Power Rangers is the main, if not the only, reason we got into toku. Zyuranger gets a ton of credit, because that's the first Sentai PR fans learn about, even if the extent is that it exists and the Yellow Ranger's a guy.

Personally, I think Sentai and Rider are kids show, but extremely well done kids shows. Even at Sentai's most goofiness, it still beats Power Rangers' goofiness (don't tell me the episodes of Go-onger where Souske looked dead didn't leave any impression on you). Heck, when watching a Sentai, I don't think (much :anime:) about it's PR counterpart or PR in general. Watching PR, however, I can always see where PR ends and Sentai takes over.

Yeah, Sentai sells toys, and it is obvious, and is meant for kiddies. I personally believe Sentai and Rider still does it with a touch of class.

As for Western influences, I'm probably a dummy, because I don't see them. There does seem a slight difference between the Abaranger-Go-onger era and Shinkenger/Goseiger, so there may've been a slight influence, but not as big as the Japanese version of Pokemon after the dub became well done.

Finally, to Fantasy Leader, yeah, Disney would've take their digital erasers and gotten rid of every feather of the Goseiger's angel wings or re-film those scenes if they were still doing Power Rangers.

I got into toku through PR as well, so you don't need to preach to me. But the point is that Zyu get highly overrated simply because of the "Wow, Sentai!" factor and it's perceived to be "more intense/mature" than MMPR. True, Zyu had the overall better plot and premise. But the characters were dull and the plot was underutilized. It didn't live up to potential. MMPR's characters, stereotypes though they were, actually did develop over time. They at least had personality.

Personally, I think Sentai and Rider are kids show, but extremely well done kids shows.

Good grief, haven't we had enough of the "kids' show" schtick? And even if that's all they were, they've been far from "well done" lately.

Even at Sentai's most goofiness, it still beats Power Rangers' goofiness (don't tell me the episodes of Go-onger where Souske looked dead didn't leave any impression on you).

I stooped watching Go-On at 15, since it was so dreadful. And both show's "goofiness" (more like idiocy) is taxing on one's sanity.

That's probably how Toei and Bandai see toku as now, just a way to peddle junk to the handful of little kids that Japan still has, but the superhero genre has never been "kids only". Obviously kids have and will always be a big part of the audience. But that doesn't mean the quality of the material should be so dumbed down below even their intelligence because Toei thinks all kids care about are shiny toys and people acting stupid in front of the camera anime-style.

There aren't even any religious references in Goseiger (which I kind of find unfortunate, it would be a good way to build up the show's mythos and symbolism. Instead it's angels playing cards :sly:).

So were the Yellow rangers from LG-Wild Force. And some of the female suit stunties were male. Overblown point there.

It gets credit for being the basis for MMPR but it needs to be rated fairly on its own. I'm tempted to tear that season up for those who think it's better after seeing Burai's death, regardless of the state MMPR was in then.

Could be aimed at any audience, its the writing and acting that can make it enjoyable to those about the target demographic.
Also, a bit of confusion here. Sousake's "death" wasn't a goofy moment, just a more dramatic tone for a character. And it's slightly unfair to comparing PR on that considering the censorship differences. Even then, PR has been capable of giving dramatic moments without breaking censorship ruling. Judge both shows separately.

Depends. Some devices are given decent intros (Go-Roader, Gekiclaw) while others are more thrown in (Faiz Blaster, Zanvat sword) In Sentai's case it does hurt with the mecha, with more bulky combinations making for toy sales but taking away the appeal of mecha fights.

Finally, to Fantasy Leader, yeah, Disney would've take their digital erasers and gotten rid of every feather of the Goseiger's angel wings or re-film those scenes if they were still doing Power Rangers.
Both would be much for Disney and not necessary from what I've seen. Disney isn't the ultimate evil for PR, lots of other factors brought it down as well.

Just remembered happen during PR Dino Thunder of show the episode Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger about that baseball player from US. A bit influential.

From Disney's angle, probably not. However there have been many other non-Japanese actors involved before Abaranger (Reuban Langdon) Think it may have to do with foreign interest.
