Underrated Movies

Mr. Underachiever

Is not impressed right now...
So, with threads about overrated movies and movies that disappointed people, what movies that were pretty much trashed did you like (or at least, not hate as much as most people) and why?

One movie that I think is incredibly underrated is Freddy Got Fingered. I think the gross out humor (as well as some shitty editing) was what killed it. If you take that out, it actually has a pretty interesting story about a guy whose father doesn't really approve of or understand what he wants to do with his life. Though, if you take out the gross humor, it wouldn't have been half as memorable. It would've been just another forgettable comedy from the late 90s/early 00s. Still, one thing that really confused me was that it seemed like Gord (Tom Green's character) was functionally retarded. I mean, who the hell goes around jerking off horses and biting off babies' umbilical cords? So, if you take that out, it makes him seem more quirky and less fucked up in the head.

Anyway, what movies do you like that nobody else did and why do you like them?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2- I think people don't like this one because it's "silly," but why redo something that you already nailed? Tobe Hooper changed things up by making the sequel (the only good one) lighthearted and entertaining in contrast to the first one that was weighty and disturbing. Instead of rehashing things that made the first one great, he did a whole new set of things with the same formula and ended up making the second one great too. It's usually pretty liked by horror fans but I don't know of a single "normal person" that's seen it and liked it (then again, when have normal people ever had valued opinions on anything horror?).

Rumble Fish- Coppola's best film. I'll stand by that too. Besides being richly heartfelt and autobiographical, it explores so many great issues in such a surreal way that it leaves you loving and hating the same things, simultaneously. It's confusingly rich, in theme, not in plotline. Great performances by Matt Dillon and Mickey Rourke (damn did his voice change--his performance here reminded me a lot of Lukas Haas's Pin in Brick), and just a really good greaser movie, much much better than The Outsiders, which everybody raves about but I've never personally cared for.

City of Violence- Truly one of the most intense, innovative, quirky, and kinetic action movies I've ever seen, but hardly made a splash outside die-hard fan circles. Which is a shame too, because it's better than a lot of the stuff that people won't ever shut up about (this means you Once Upon A Time In China). Oh well. I liked it.

outsiders was a great book..the movie was awesome..but not as good as the book

rumble fish ..i didn't even know there was a movie for it o_O..but the book was totally awesome ^^

one movie i think is severely underrated... is devilman (japanese movie for those of you who don't know it XD) i heard a great deal of fuss prior to its release and then it came out and nothing......... i think its a very deep movie that gets into prejudice and all that ...that the comics didn't even touch on! ... and yet.. i hear nothing about it at all! i think i've watched the movie about 4-5 times while i was in jpn (on rental dvds) and i just couldn't put it down.. there was just somethign about the betrayal and emotion in that movie that kept me watching it over and over

I think it does, it's just one of those movies that's too cool for a lot of folks to get.
