ULTRAMAN SAGA - Rumors and Pictures

Looking at the box office take of the movies in question, it becomes clearly obvious that the general audience is most interested in the classic Heisei Ultras of the '90's - and their human hosts.

Ultraman Mebius and The Ultra Brothers focused on the newest Ultra, Mebius, in his human form, featuring both the human and Ultran forms of the first four Ultras, with the Ultra forms of Zoffy and Taro arriving for a late cameo. Made about $4.17 million dollars, not adjusted for inflation.

Two years later, Super 8 UltraBrothers focused on "AU" versions of the first three Heiseis, primarily on Daigo, Tiga's host; but also on Shin and Gamu, Dyna and Gaia, respectively. With the four Classic Showas as friendly neighbors and mentors to the Heisei Three, and Mebius being dragged over for cannon fodder. That movie, which focused on the human hosts, and had the least amount of fighting; made the most money, over $8 million dollars.

The next year, Ultra Galaxy Legend, which focused on the first two Ultramen, as well as Mebius, and introduced Zero, with far too brief cameos by Asuka and Musashi, came in second, making $6.1 million dollars. From the Mega Monster Battle movie thread, I noticed that Asuka and Dyna were heavily involved in the marketing for the film, but had very little screen time - and absolutely no mention in the opening credits. Nice way to treat someone who was returning from the dead ... >:( Despite being potentially the biggest game-changer in Ultraman history, at least as far as Dyna fans were concerned.

Last year, Zero was put out to star in his own movie, and three older properties of Tsuburaya were hitched to his star. It also had a cameo by Ultraman Noa, as a deus ex machina. At last report, before it dropped off the charts, it had made $4.78 million dollars.

It's fairly clear that, the producers and writers are quite fond of the Classic Showa Era, and had wanted to modernize it, creating their own "super" Ultraman for that purpose. It's even more clear that the general audience is far more interested in supporting the Ultras of their childhood in the mid-'90's; and that the hardcore Ultra fans' are not enough to safely support the franchise on their own. Which leads us to the newest Ultra movie ...

Now, we have Ultraman Saga coming up, a tad late this time. Again, Zero is front and center, but right behind him are Dyna and Cosmos. And, it's rumored that Cosmos' and Leo's actors are in the movie, as well as various main cast members from Dyna's show. The official list of actors should be announced soon. One would hope that Tsuburaya will give extensive screen time to Dyna and Cosmos, especially on their human hosts. This nostalgia factor should serve to draw in the general audience, boosting the box office.

Which is absolutely critical to getting the Ultraman franchise off the ground, and back on TV again.

....I don't think I can deal with this right now.

Why do the 90s trio require more love then ...any of the others?

Dyna at least got to be AROUND unlike *EVERY* Ultra outside Ultraman, Mebius, and Seven's body during the finale of Ultra Galaxy.

Hell, they got a full movie centered on them. Well Tiga did, the other two were more side characters.

Also you seem to not realize that most of the Super 8 Ultra Brothers success was that Daigo's actor is a famous boy band member.

Guys, please stop derailing this thread. If you're going to have a discussion about this, take it to the thread made for that.

I'm liking the catchphrase for this movie.
"Bokura ni wa mada, kagayaku kibō ga aru" (For us, there is still a shining hope)

I think Tsuburaya should make new Movie of Ultra Partner.I mean Gaia/Agul team up with Mebius/Hikari,that will be a great Movie and new Era Red with Blue Ultraman...:buttrock:

Actually, I'm quite aware that the relative success of Super 8 was due to Hiroshi Nagono's (Daigo's) fame from V6, which the director of the film thought was drawing in more ladies than usual. There may be other reasons for its success as well, like the fact that musician-actor Takeshi Tsuruno (Shin Asuka) was riding a wave of popularity himself for being in a top musical band, plus was an established TV star due to that quiz show. On top of that, it appears that Takeshi Yoshioka (Gamu) has been active in Japanese action-adventure films.

More importantly, the reason why Super 8 worked so well, at least for me, was that it was the only chance to see Shin Asuka alive again, after he'd been killed off at the end of Dyna. In fact, I believe it was due to Super 8's success that Tsuburaya finally relented - and let him come back "for real" in Ultra Galaxy Legend. [Probably didn't hurt that he was coming off a new TV show as well ... :) ]

Basically, every Heisei Ultraman show had a happy ending at its conclusion, wrapping things up with the characters, and letting them ride off into the sunset.

Except Dyna.

It took eleven years before we even got a glimpse of a happy ending, and we know absolutely nothing about how it happened!

So, amongst other things, I'm now hoping that Saga will provide that happy ending for Dyna.

And, who knows? Perhaps it will provide a brand new beginning.

A Painful Lesson In Self-Mutilation ...

.... I don't see why they need to continue it and have brand suicide like mainstream comic book companies have now, they need to appease the audience of THIS generation alot more otherwise there won't be fans or sales. Just widdle the older generation to nothing gradually and no one will notice.

Speaking briefly as a long-term comics fan, the main reason why the attempts of the major American comics companies to expand their sales by going for a younger demographic constantly fail is simple:

They enrage the long-term fans who have supported their favorite books and characters by BRUTALLY KILLING OFF beloved characters!

And, as they keep on learning, there aren't enough younger/new fans to support the new characters - period. So, if they keep "whittling away" at the long-term fans without getting any younger fans to permanently replace them, they're going to go out of business.

At least Tsuburaya is learning that lesson, and is gradually bringing back beloved characters for brief visits, while trying to develop a new Ultra that will attract new fans.
