The Original GODZILLA Being Restored & Remastered for the Criterion Collection!

Criterion makes awesome Blu-Rays. I have them for the 1946 French Beauty and the Beast, Akira Kurosawa's High and Low and his Seven Samurai. All of them looked and sounded great and had great audio. The extra were awesome too (the films were awesome; highly recommended). This release of Godzilla is going to rock and I will buy it. Going to to be expensive since either the next week or week before will be the TNG sampler on Blu-Ray (another great release).

:buttrock:

For one, Godzilla, King of the Monsters! respected the original Japanese version. Raymond Burr was not a protagonist, but a commentator, basically telling us what's happening in the film. This is different from worse, total Americanizations like Varan the Unbelievable. That was a very bad case of Power Rangerization. (And is thankfully not available on DVD; whereas the Japanese version is released here by Media Blasters.)

Yeah it totally respected the original, you know, neutering the entire anti-nuclear weapon message alongside any references to the bombing of the Lucky Dragon ship and Godzilla's origins. Aside from that, it stuck with the film and I could argue that it gave the film an international flavor.

I want to see the Americanized Varan and judge it myself, for frankly I thought the Japanese version to be an utter piece of crap with good effects. Kinda like a Michael Bay film. There can only be improvements from it, so I hope the American can get preserved like it should so I can judge if it's really bad.

For two, I am certain that there will be no Americanization or Japanization of the Legendary Pictures Godzilla film, which will be made as is, and will be shown in Japan as is (dubbed or subbed). The film will have full cooperation between the US and Japan, as it should.

You missed my point. I meant a combination of the 1954 and 1956 Americanization in terms of plot and story with a kickass conclusion between two monsters (GRA). Two hours long and it would be great.

Watch films like Frankenstein Conquers the World, Monster Zero, War of the Gargantuas, King Kong Escapes, and Latitude Zero (all Toho) to see how a film done between Japan and the US should be made. Very few changes were made (WOTG had a few alternate scenes), and yet, are both made available in the US. Why fix something that isn't broke?
Seen all but the last two and I agree. Those are all great films that perfectly utilized the American actors to their fullest extent at broadening the film's base.

There has to be something they have to fix otherwise we wouldn't need a remake, we'd have Godzilla films coming out theatrically in the United States sans not on TV or on the film channels ,and they'd be successful. But obviously the Millenium series had that overused formulaic feel like a Power Rangers episode, which becomes more and more apparent in G x MG film which feels like an anime episode crossed with a Sentai which can be blamed on the whole piloting Kiryu part. OK films, but in contrast to the Heisei films which were for no better words sellable to a theatrical audience , the Millenium fold might as well been on ABC Family or the Hallmark Channel in its languished quality.

I'm glad TOHO isn't going to be making the films for a while since they don't know **** how to make a great G film anyways as its been seen . Hopefully LP can get the ball rolling for a long film series that will make me forget about the Final Wars and the whole Millenium series.

The anime-influenced style of GxMG is awesome - it's the bland, bland screenplay that drags it down. The Millenium series isn't astounding but with the notable exception of Final Wars it's far and away the better set of movies when held up alongside the Heisei movies. But, really, Toho hasn't made a truly great Godzilla film since 1989.

Destroy All Monsters is out on Blu-ray, Godzilla vs. Megalon has been delayed due to the company getting full approval from Toho, word on the street is G vs. Megalon should be released before X-Mas. I think it'll end up being Jan 2012.

Also on a Toku Blu-ray note, got my copy of Zebraman 2!.

Biollante was awesome. :castlerock:

I watched the film the first few times and liked it , but then it just became suck. GMK is kind of like an early Heisei Ghidrah that came out too late and with some flaws of its own, and 2000 by the American version was pretty action packed awesome . But it felt disjointed overall and spastic, though I wished they went on with a third film in the GxMG series and started a series from there. It had potential which they threw away for Power Rangers: Godzilla Force or Mutant Sentai Gojiraman . It felt more like the Batman anime shorts and should have just been all cut to like half hour shorts for how the film series was treated. If anything, if GMK was a hit, they could have a Kaneko-fied trilogy like for Gamera that might have been fantastic to watch.

I'm gonna buy both BR and DVD for the Gojira set , rip the BR and save the DVD for viewing pleasure.

Speaking of "Gojiraman," I created one over 20 years ago, a cross between Ultraman and Devilman! This is the project that ultimately became Rekira.

I did also attempt a Toho Monster-themed Super Sentai back in the mid-1990s. This was before I did the Dynamic V project (my own original attempt at Super Sentai) back in 1997, which has ended up becoming part of Rekira. :)

Godzilla 2000 seems like it should be mentioned.. The American version made a few significant changes, adding in a bit more comedy and cutting a few scenes to help with the pacing, and even Toho consider it to be the superior version. With everyone bad mouthing the American adaptions, I just felt like I should bring it up.
