The Lesser-Known Toku Discussion Thread

Marika was a huge move in the right direction but I think Drive did a lot of harm to the idea of having another regular female Rider.

Also, yeah, Poitrine is a lot of fun. The action isn't great by any means because it often requires the main actress to be the one doing the fights (she is obviously not a fighter by profession) but it's got a nice sense of humor (lots of ordinary life stuff) and interesting visuals - plus the idea of a girl being made a superhero against her will by a local god is kind of hilarious.

I was actually never disappointed with any of the Fushigi Hero shows I managed to catch. All...one of them. And random episodes. It's definitely the most lacking tokusatsu franchise is representation.

There are what, three, movie-only Rider ladies? Femme, the one from Hibiki and Nadeshko? Mono has a point on this one.

I wasn't talking about Riders, just females in general. There are plenty of them in Rider.

Frankly very few of those female Riders were that likeable as characters, anyway.

I don't know how people feel about it outside of Brazil, but Metal Heroes are very popular here (mainly Juspion), and I don't see people talking about them in international forums/websites.

I actually find most of them pretty bad, but Metalder and Jiraya are totally worth watching. Metalder is actually one of the best tokus I've ever watched.

I NEVER found Poitrine and it still bothers me. Everything ive read about the series is a win-win.

For what is worth it, Poitrine was dubbed in brazilian portuguese, if you can understand it. :p

L'Arc from the Blade movie, Ixa on special occasions, Kivala from the first movie war, one of the Mages from Wizard, and Marika from Gaim. And of course Tackle was in all but name. Sadly she also established the tradition of having them killed off. :redface2:

Yeah I just started watching the live action Sailor Moon series and you very quickly realise how much you take for granted the team of seasoned stunt actors who can do these things more or less literally with their eyes shut.

The fansub groups that most of us English speakers use haven't done much with the Metal Hero shows yet. Gavan and Juspion are both about half done, but that's it really.

I've seen Metalder via a combination of subs from a long-defunct sub group and hk subs, and even when the translations were terrible you could still tell it was an awesome show. I'm surprised that one hasn't been done really, seeing as it was one of the series that the creator of Garo worked on.

In Brazil, all metal heroes from Gavan to Solbrain (I think? Not sure about Exceed Draft) where dubbed during the late 80's~early 90's and broadcast on TV. It is kinda weird to know they weren't subbed by fans considering the crossovers that happened in the last years. For instance, how you're supposed to enjoy Jiraya's crossover on Ninninger if you haven't watched it? :/

Anyway... we also had Lionman, Machineman, Cybercops and Bicrossers. Lionman and Machineman didn't work for me, but Cybercops (despite the bad visual fx) was pretty good, it had an amazing story and charismatic characters. I remember watching a couple of episodes from Bicrossers, but not enough memories to say whether it was a good or bad series.

There's a group called Weeaboo-Shogun that's only 7 episodes away from finishing Winspector, and MBE is 13 episodes into Janperson. So it's starting to look up for the Metal Hero franchise. Once all Sentai are subbed eventually, I'm sure that franchise what a few of these groups will target next.

We're as mystified as most of the Japanese children watching Ninninger who had probably never heard of the ninja hero who was on TV a quarter of a century before they were born.

Sadly here in the UK we only got the Saban adaptations. I don't think any of the Japanese originals have aired over here. Heck, we haven't even gotten many of the Godzilla films.

I legit forgot Weabo-Shotgun. Kinda embarrasing as I follow 'em on twitter. I did remember Janperson, but I figured "and a quarter of this other series" wasn't exactly tipping the balance.
