As I understand it only became black after V3 as a way of distinguishing the Double Riders. I personally don't mind since I just look at the gloves and stripes to work out who it is.

Kind of. Rider 2's original helmet was dark green. However, when he returned with the red gloves and such later on, his helmet was changed to light green to match silver gloves/boots Rider 1. Comes the V3 movie, then they give Rider 2 a dark green helmet again. In the tv show, they actually give the dark helmet to Rider 1 when he returns. 2 keeps the darker helmet in X's movie (although a lighter one in the tv show again...), and they finally give him the actual black helmet in Stronger.
