Sometimes..traditional in Super Sentai that need to be broken down.

Because she's a hypocrite that wants any excuse to bitch about this stuff.

I think its a stupid argument. To me it is the same argument about Religion, Science, and Political Ideology. No one has the right to say anything about anyone elses beliefs (unless they hurt you in some way).

It's not "culture." It's a sexist tradition in all kinds of media (not just Japanese) that female warriors don't get to use the same weapons as a man, apparently it looks good for a woman to hold a sword or bow but not a hammer or chopper:

but tradition is culture, and subsequently its almost nature. Let time condemn them not your ideology/ beliefs.

So, you think the idea that women are inferior to men and aren't "real heroes" (thus, they should wear pretty pastel colours to show that they are girls, and shouldn't be given certain weapons) doesn't harm anyone?

... What??

Nurture isn't nature. Culture is nurturing. Nurture-- how someone is raised-- often has nothing to do with what's natural.

People like to believe their culture is what it is because that's natural and it couldn't be any other way. The problem is that other people, no different from you, have totally different cultures they find just as natural.

So any culture could be different if the members of that culture decided to do different things. Of course, for most people, it's just easier to follow traditions so that's what they do.

Does it harm you? Does the idea of another group of people who continue to perpetuate an ideology different to you hurt you in anyway? I have no problem with women being inferior or even superior to me, it doesnt bother me one bit. I come from the Hispanic culture where that is the norm. And yes, for someone who has grown up in the US and sees this, it does bother me but that is how it is. It doesnt bother the people that are like that, so who am I to complain to other people or them about what I think to believe is wrong.

You are right, i did use the wrong word for that, it is nurturing. And yes I totally agree with you that people tend to follow the way things are, but is that wrong? Do you have the right to tell someone its wrong, when it works for them.

There's another one - male Rangers get axes or hammers, female Rangers get a sword or crossbow of some kind as it is more "ladylike." It's not even to do with how powerful the weapon is, Toei seems to be OK with a woman using a huge gun

Have you ever watched other anime, or play RPG like Final Fantasy, or any other action movies? Guys almost always get the heavier weapons, whereas girls get weapons that aren't too heavy like sword, or have range weapons like bow-and-arrow. It's not sexist to say that men are generally stronger physically than women, therefore it won't make sense to have a petite lady (like Japanese girls usually are) to carry a weapon that seems to be more compatible for them. Btw, ShinkenYellow's Land Slicer weapon looks to be heavier than ShinkenBlue's Water Bow, so girls don't always get the lightest weapon.

That's true, but since they only use the weapon when they're in suits (and presumably have enhanced strength) I shouldn't think it makes much difference. What about characters like TimeGreen and Go-on Green, who are small, skinny teenage boys - they use heavy weapons that they probably couldn't handle while untransformed

Yes, sexism is wrong, and it does hurt people, men and women alike. Hiding behind "culture" and "tradition" is what people have done for centuries to keep progressive things from happening, but that doesn't make it right. Inequality is something that we should always fight against.

Remember that just because it "works for" you doesn't mean that it works for everyone -- the defenders of the status quo are usually the ones it benefits, and the ones with the power to reinforce it.

Now, that's my general soapbox rant about sexism. Does it apply to this argument? I dunno, I haven't seen enough Sentai to say authoritatively how the male-vs-female weapon distribution breaks down. I will say that as pointed out, Goseiger was pretty egalitarian (the Landicks both used big heavy weapons, the others used lighter weapons), and Gokaiger seems to continue that (since they don't appear to have specialty weapons at all.)

And I still think the ball is way lamer than the ribbon.

I always get the impression that after henshin, the sentais gain bonuses that increase their vitality, durability, powers/abilities, and access to weapons that they don't get in their normal form. That's why they appear to be able to withstand multiple physical punishments from the enemies, and dish out superhuman powers to defeat the villain. I have never seen the sentais showing exaggerated strength, however, but I don't think even with ampified muscles it would mean that they can be proficient with much heavier weapons.

Besides, heroines across the genres, from video games to anime fantasy, usually portrayed as using the traits different from male heroes, who'd use brute strength over tactics to get the jobs done. Super Sentai merely follow this trend. And before you think it's a Japanese thing, I've played my share of American RPG and watched enough movies to see that it's the same for Western genres, as well. Even Xena: Warrior Princess uses a sword, not a two-handed warhammer or a heavy mace to get the job done.

Well, yes. That is a problem: it is setting aside women as different from male heroes. If they are considered worthy to be on the battlefield alongside a man, they should get the same treatment, which includes the same weapons, attacks, uniforms etc.

A ribbon could be used like a whip, too? Or to trip the enemy over or something? Whereas the ball was ... a ball. I got nothin'
