Shinkenger's Outcome - Blame it on the Mecha?

Once people begin to accept that alot of mecha will be continuing bc kids like to buy them then we can all move on and not judge a series on it. For someone to say Shinkenger was a failure because of the mecha is just retarded. There were 13 mecha and 49 episodes.... do the math.

See, the problem is not the mecha themselves but how they're introduced and incorporated into the series. If they feel random and tacked on only for the sake of selling more toys and not because there's a reason the heroes need them, then, yes, that IS going to take away from episode quality and make the show weaker for it.

It was pretty obvious that the writers either didn't plan for or just didn't want to add more mecha past ShinkenGold's two introductory Origami and didn't really put any effort into writing about the rest when the time came. Hence why the late 20s-early 30s episodes dragged for some.

Sadly, it seems the writers are going to need to plan for this, as the Bandai mandates/need for a Christmas Toy Rush are not going to go away. This is honestly something I will give Go-Onger credit for. While it had a lot of mecha, all of their introductions added to the story, either as a way of fighting an increase in enemy strength or just adding more dimensions to the characters.

If you guys want the writers to make some sort of plan for every mecha debut in a series especially when it's 10+ mecha then you are all dreaming.

This isn't the olden days when there were 5-7 mecha a series and they all had a storyline attached to them.

It's different times. BoJ loves money, kids love the toys and not the storylines (unfortunatley). Accept it.

I dislike it aswell but I've learned not to bitch about it every fucking year because it gets boring.

^ What also gets boring every fucking year is people acting as though nobody should ever have a critical thought about this stuff at all. We should just be so gosh darn glad there is Sentai or Kamen Rider wether the creators do a good job or not. Just buy whatever shinny thing Bandai shoves in our faces.

Believe me I understand getting tired of negativity or people acting as though the shows are made for american adults rather than Japanese children. ..but at the same time there's just as much room on this forum for people who love and are invested in this material to discuss what they do not like about the current creative direction of this stuff as there is for people to go "OMGmostbadassepicever!:buttrock:" about it.

They aren't, actually. If Super Sentai is written at all the way other Japanese merchandise-driven shows are, it is customary to have a synopsis for all episodes, including introductions of all known merchandise elements, ready before the show begins production. There may be changes made as the series is in production, as last-minute toys are prepared or rewrites made.

Usually touches added at the last minute will be of noticeably lower quality than planned elements, just because stuff will be getting rushed out to meet deadline. Unless Bandai isn't planning their toy lines well, the Super Sentai writers should know at least most of the toyetic elements they'll be dealing with before they've even done casting.

So it's really not unreasonable to expect writers to construct good stories around the toyetic elements-- provided they know about them ahead of time, of course. Some of Shinkenger's toyetic elements felt a bit tacked-on to me so I wonder if Bandai didn't let the creative team know about them soon enough. The good integrations Shinkenger did were really good.

Responding to the first post, I'm not gonna lie..I was so turned off by the mecha battles (which were unnecessary as hell btw if it wasn't for that whole "2nd life" crap) that I fast-forwarded through them after I got to around episode 35 or so.

But...I realize Sentai needs merchandise referencing in the show so screw it.

Shinkenger really wasn't one of the best shows in terms of justifying why the monsters grow huge. I noticed in some episodes they just kinda ignored the 2nd life thing if they didn't feel like doing a mecha fight.
