sentai ladies and their animal/magical creature trend

I find it funny that you can say that and yet on the other hand you say you don't care about the writing quality in a toku because it's kid-oriented.

How is that mutually exclusive with liking Liveman? But then I may be biased since Liveman was only the third Sentai I ever watched

I agree that penguins are an all-round awful choice for a mech. If a forthcoming Sentai ever makes it the main mecha of one of the heroes, I will bash my head repeatedly against the nearest wall

Because it's all around a well-written show and what people like me would like Sentai and toku in general to do more often? Not something that's mediocre at best but gets waved off by people as being for kids, so it doesn't matter.

Serious =/= good. Liveman was 24 years ago and times, tastes and target audiences change.

This still doesn't mean that a penguin mech will ever be a good idea. Or that a bunny makes sense next to a cheetah and gorilla.

to be fair, a bunny is still MUCH BIGGER than a beetle (which are Beet and Stag's motifs); a dolphin is much bigger than a beetle as well (Hurricanger)

Serious =/= good.

Then.... why do you like Liveman?

And I didn't even mention seriousness. I like Kauranger, don't I? That doesn't mean the wackiness in newer Sentais is automatically passable.

That has really nothing to do with what we're talking about, which is quality writing. Unless you're claiming today's audiences don't want quality.

Did I say it would?

But beetles at least have defense mechanisms that are more than just "run away".

Don't you think Liveman's style is a bit depressing for five-year-olds?

Or hop away, if you're a bunny

I think sometimes that a tough character can pull off a wimpy animal though. Go-on Gold's mecha was a chicken ...

yeah; and Ninjablack's mechas were frog themed as well
btw, J is perhaps bigger than Usada, but if you're talking about the Buddyroids themselves, Usada is much smarter than Nick and Gorisaki, who are an insult to their badass animal shape
besides, at least a bunny can run; a beetle's too heavy to even do that
and you seem to forgot that bunnies have pretty sharp teeth; I wouldn't like having a rabbit bite me.
and Go-Busters is the proof chicken are much scarier than given credit for

Kids liked Batman TAS. And it's not only kids who watch toku or buy toku merchandise. Or any superhero stuff in general.

But Go-Onger isn't exactly a "serious" show. Even the tough bear is made to be cutesy.

LOL I'm tempted to quote this and be done with this topic.

Definitely, in series where the mechs are animals, there's a certain bias in "which animal each team member gets". I think it has to do with how the female Sentai members are treated in general. This is what I think is going on in the decision-making; the female members(and in extension, the mechs they use) are effective and powerful in their own way, but never in terms of brute strength/raw power. Their standout traits are rarely strength, but heart, skill, speed or just pure guts.

To date, the only female Sentai member whose standout trait in the team is strength is BoukenYellow, who has basically rock crushing scoopers as her unique weapon, drives a bulldozer, and her roll call being "the strong adventurer". While BoukenPink's standout trait is tactical analysis.

To be perfectly honest now, I don't have any problems with this trend. It does say something to how Japan(or at least the people who make Sentai) view women, but I don't necessarily think it's bad or needs to be changed.
