Sentai - Is there really need for a Mecha Battle?

Black Ranger RX

I don't have low self esteem.
Just been thinking..

Is there really need for any giant mecha battles in Sentai?

Now, a basic answer would be "yes" because.. well, they've enlarged the monster and the Rangers have to summon their mecha and destroy it. But sometimes it seems a little irellivent to the plot. Usually the mecha fight battles are over too quickly (as Basri once told me about the ones in Flashman), but sometimes it's like that in other series (and Power Rangers too :P). It's like that in Liveman sometimes (which I'm currently watching), Cosmic Live Slash, Slash the monster, badabing badaboom!! :P

Hmm, maybe this could be proof that Toei are trying to sell more toys!! Well, guess that's a case of "anything for the little Tykes".

What does everyone else think?

Well, you're referencing older series that didn't have the tech to do much more than "grow, slash, yay." With CG these days, they can do more...they just don't often choose to.

But I like the mecha, personally.

I personally like the mecha but it's too repetitive. At the end of every episode you can expect every monster to fall at the hands of the massive cannon and then suddenly be 100ft tall and then the mecha is summoned blah blah blah. I wish they'd just kill them in awesome ways in normal battles and just use the mecha to fight other mecha. I like Hurricanger's idea though, they create a large robot version of the fallen monster and of course in DekaRanger when the Alienizer's pilot a mecha themselves. But individual killings would be awesome like I dunno, one Ranger stabbing them to death and another one shooting its head off and another one could be just dying to the massive cannon! ROLLING BOMBER!

You got some uh...violence issues there, huh? :)

That bit about monsters getting blown up by the Sentai bazooka and then grew into giant form was kinda weird IMO.

If I were to write something, I would make some stories only focusing on normal sized monster and the Sentai team would spent the entire episode just fighting like that, so without Mecha's screentime, more Senshi fights! Then comes the bazooka or whatever finisher to end the episode.

When I wanted to use a Mecha, probably I wouldn't wait till the Sentai team use their finisher -- Would just enlarge the monsters while they were still battling the team. Enlarged only after getting blown up seems like it was the Sentai finisher that gave em more power! Okay, so its the villains which had the power to make em big.

Maybe the villains could be having some problems with enlarging their monsters as their machine or whatever creature thats responsible in making the monsters grow big needs time to recharge!

Maybe that could prevent the team from becoming Mecha-happy, too! :P

"Super Live Crash!"

Basiclly I look at it this way. If you want pointless mecha battles Toei gives you sentai, If you don't want them...they give you Kamen Rider.

And if you want good ones, there's the Seishin series. I really enjoyed the mech fights from Gransazer and Justiriser, but they're especially good in Sazer X. You still have your special effects laced special attacks mixed with plenty of mech-fu. Another thing Toho is doing right these days!

oh....

Hmmmm...Robots in Sentai we have to give the "thanks to" to the Mazinger (Go Nagai). Without this, the "Super" in "Super Sentai" couldn't exist.

I like the ancient mechas. Today i prefer much more the CG's of the mechas and his special punchs, kicks, and powers, than the big boxes human stunts walking...well...try to walk.

I don't know...nowaday i don't approve the mecha as they are. :nono:

I want Daileon, i want Titan Jr, i want Jushi Fighters. Less big box, more moviments! :shakefist

The only thing I say needs to go the CG Mecha formations and mecha. I prefer the old school guy in suit. That's one thing I didn't like about Gaoranger. But that's just me.

There really isn't but by now it's tradition.
Having a sentai without a mecha battle is like having a hamburger without patty.
I think...
