PS3 & Hard Drive question

Plug that sucker into your PC, open Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the drive and choose "Properties". It'll say what your drive is under "File System", and you can format if to FAT32 by choosing "Format" after you've right-clicked the drive again to make it readable on your console. You'll lose all the stuff on the drive, though, so make sure it's nothing you can't replace.

Also: if you end up accessing your drive on the PS3, odds are you'll have to hit the Triangle Button and choose "Display All" if you want to view its file structure. PS3 be weird like that.

Double Also: I have NO idea what to do about that extra USB cable. You might not even need it. Try not using it unless you have to?

So to confirm:

1. Plug Hard drive into PC.
2. Format it to Fats32.
3. Unplug it and plug it into the PS3.
4. Turn system on.
5. Press Triangle button and all the files should show up.

Here are some other instructions I found, which seems alot more complicated then what you've told me.

[hide] 1. Purchase your external hard drive. Any hard drive will do. ( 1000GB w00t! )

2. One you have your external hard drive is purchased, use the USB cord provided to connect it to a COMPUTER (not your Playstation 3).

* IMPORTANT* Once your external hard drive is connected to your computer, go to START, CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, and select DISK MANAGER on the left hand side options. Select the external drive and read the "File System" type. If it says "NTFS", right click the disk and select "Delete Partition".

3. The reason you needed to delete the partition is because it MUST be FAT32. However, Windows XP will not partition a hard drive into FAT32. You must instead go to DOWNLOAD.COM and search for "Swiss Knife". Download the program that comes up (CompuApps SwissKnife V3 x.xx) and install it when the download completes. Once the install is complete, run the application and select the external hard drive you need to partition. On the top select the following settings: (Partition Type: Primary), (File System: FAT32), and (Volume Label: [whatever you want]). Then at the bottom, select "Create" and you're done.

4. One you are SURE the partition is FAT32, open "My Computer" and double-click on your empty external hard drive. Now, you will want to create a folder system identical to that on the Playstation 3. Right click to create a new folder and name the first folder "Photo". Do this for "Music", "Video" and "Game". When you are finished, you should have 4 folders total in the hard drive. Each folder should be empty.

5. Now, you can load all the music you want into your music folder, all the video you want into your video folder, and all the photos you want into your photo folder. Your game folder should still be empty(duh).

6. At the bottom right hand corner of the screen, left click the green arrow in your icons list and select "Safely remove..." Once your computer tells you "XXX drive can now be safely removed", unplug the hard drive from your computer.

7. Now, you can connect the hard drive to your Playstation 3 and use the extra space to save information and access all your extra content saved on your external hard drive.

8. Congratulations! You now have turned your 20gb or 60gb PS3 into a Monster 1 Terabyte PS3!!!(or whatever yours is...:smileywink

The Disk Manager step may be needed depending on your drive, but I have neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever had to use that Swiss Knife business.

Also, I usually plug portables into the PS3 after the system's already turned on, but to each their own.

Hopefully this works. The reason I'm interested in this is stricly for watching the TVN HD releases in full HD on my tv.

I also have a 360, so if the PS3 thing doesnt work I'd like to try it out on the 360 which I think would probally be the same steps just connecting it to the 360 instead of the PS3 afterwards.

This will also save me a ton of cash on Toku Blu-rays that I wanted to buy, so I can use that cash for other items.

How do I check if my portable drive is a fat32?.

So I connected the portable drive to both my 360 and PS3 and went into ALL of the options and nothing came up about the hard drive so I could not access anything. On the 360 the option for the "portable devices" was NOT bolded and could not be accessed even after the portable drive was connected to the system. The portable drive I have aswell has the double cords (for extra power).

Anyone able to help me out here, mainly for the PS3 and what options I need to do/go into to access the hard drive and watch my stuff in HD?.

To check fat32 you need to go and connect it to your computer and check the properties. When you connect it to the ps3, if you see the icon for external devices/ removable devices (i dont remember what icon it is because I have a custom theme). Move to the icon, then press triangle and then the side menus will come up and select display all. If you press x instead of triangle nothing will happen.

If the icon doesnt appear, that means the external is not fat32.

If that's mostly what your interested in, try PS3 Media Server your PS3 will detect and stream the files directly from your PC as long as they're on the same network. For best results you'll want the connection to be lan based, wifi also works, but some of the default settings will need to be adjusted for the best quality.

Note that this will also play mkv, ogg, divx/xvid, mp4 encodes, and has a built in transcoder for anything else. This will also allow you to copy the files straight from your PC to your PS3 hard drive if you have a slower wifi connection.

On a side note, despite the name, it will also work with the 360.

Got it to work. Had to use the Swiss Knife program aswell.

Tested out OOO #7 in HD and it looked awesome. Now I can save a ton of $$$ from not buying so many Blu-rays. But I still need to buy the Alien Anthology, no doubt about it.
