Hard Drive Problemo

Forever Knight

Eye See You
On the weekend I transfered some stuff on my portable hard drive to another folder on the hard drive and I noticed the transfering slowed down and even the loading.

So now I plug it into my laptop and everything loads but the movie files take long to load and now freeze every few seconds.

Any advice on what I can do besides formatting it?.

Sounds like the drive might be dying. If you can, get all the stuff off of you can and maybe back it up on dvds or something. Sadly there isn't a whole lot you can do about a dying drive except back up what you can salvage and replace it. :(

:C I second this.

Shake the hard drive and if you can hear something, it's broken.

My first thoughts are format it and check if it does work and if it doesn't get a new one.

Next time, please use flash drive. It's much faster.

:eyebrow: They have the same speed. He needs the hard drive for large files. He can't substitute it with a flash drive.

Alright I attempted to transfer files but that didn't even work, it would freeze on the first file and then give me an error so I just unplugged it and will try to get a buddy of mine to nab me a new one.

Luckily this wasn't my drive with all of my HD movies and HD Toku on it so that is good.

As for all of the files I lost, luckily I wrote them all down and am in the process of downloading them again. Not a big loss but a little bit of a whore-****.

Sorry to hear it's not transferring at all now. And yeah, having to re-download stuff is a bitch and a half. But like you said, at least it's not the HD stuff.

What was the error message you got when the transfer failed? Are you using a USB external enclosure, with an internal HDD inside of it, or is it a dedicated external like western digital makes (passport series)? In my experience it's a bad idea to put all your eggs in one basket. Hard drives aren't nearly as appropriate for long term offline storage as DVD-Rs are unless you keep two separate backups as the chances of two separate drives failing at the same time is negligible.

I have to agree about backing things up on DVD-R also look into something like drop box or something similarto it. One more thing if you have the money to splurge get an Solid State Drive(SSD) hard drive the are great.
