Power Rangers vs. TMNT

Too bad Rangers have those gun things that shoot those laser thingamajigs.

You may not have known this (and I can't fault you for being uninitiated), but Raphael once got shot in the fucking face and Donatello got lit up with a submachine gun and thrown out of a helicopter ala Chev Chelios and both Turtles managed to pull their **** together and make massive armies of ninjas, robots, alien assassins and weird dinosaurs with rocket launchers eat their own appendages, and they still got home in time to order a few pies before Dominoes stopped delivering.

I've never seen a Power Ranger do anything remotely cool enough to deserve even being mentioned in the same paragraph as the Ninja Turtles, which is why I've split this one off for no good reason.

(You do remember those specific Turtles shared a channel with "The Nanny" right?)

Demi Lovato is a prepubescent teen idol with her own line of body sprays, something that most Power Rangers (male and female) are probably well acquainted with. Fran Drescher is a hot chick and I'm sure that each Turtle had their way with her more than once.

This is the part where someone posts a picture of the Megazord (doesn't matter which) that says: "I have a giant robot. Your point is invalid."

Maybe, but that's kind of beside the point. The biggest underdog will easily win any fight if the odds are stacked enough in his favor. Fact: I could beat Fedor Emelianenko if I had a giant robot. Well, I could beat Fedor anyway, but that's off topic. It could be argued that the reason the Power Rangers have giant robots in the first place is because they're totally incapable of handling all those meanyhead foam rubber animals and household objects using their own ingenuity. How many superheroes do you know that get foiled by toasters and baseball gloves and ****?

Honestly both shows were on equel grounds of being infantile, stupid and 20 minute toy commercials.

That's only if you're using the 1987 or 2003 Turtles cartoons as your point of comparison, which is like a political caricature of the Mona Lisa compared to the Mirage Comics line of TMNT comics. In fact, the Laird/Eastman comics the only incarnation I even acknowledge these days other than the first live-action movie, which, let's face it, was cooler than all our moms combined.

Okay, then ignoring how hot Fran is, with that logic, what does being on the same channel have to do with anything? Where else would it go? I mean, it was bought by Nick. It's not like there's another channel allowed for it

No it can't considering they only use those when the monsters get big.

Silver Age man.

But if we're talking about Power Rangers, it would have to be in live-action, not Mirage Comics.

Also, I have to entertain the notion that TMNT and the Rangers would never fight each other unless it was something stupid like mind control

You do realize that Power Rangers is an unintentional parody, right?
...How? (and there's a difference between intentional and unintentional parody)

The Turtles don't have a kick-ass Ron Wasserman soundtrack.

Hearing Fran Drescher moan in bed? That's a loss.

...Don't they blow them up BEFORE they go giant? I could be missing something, but I thought they did.

While we're stating facts?

FACT: Ingenuity in superhero stories is usually a euphemistic way of saying "plot device". The Power Rangers generally handed out a beatdown before taking it to the zords.

This is why there are Batman fans calling Terry a pussy 'cause he had superpowers while he was up against futuristic versions of villains the ORIGINAL could barely beat.

"He should be using ingenuity!" (Read: The writer should make more plot devices for a normal man to kick the crap out of supervillains with.)

Power Rangers is an adaptation.

An adaptation that was made arguably sillier than the original material it was using (that pig monster defeated by food stuffed with chili peppers came from the original show, after all). There is no such thing as an "unintentional parody" especially since there was nothing like Power Rangers in American media TO parody.

TMNT was a very specific parody of Frank Miller's writing style on Daredevil at the time. Why do you think the ninjas were called "The Foot"? Why do you think Raph used his Sais as stabbing tools (like a certain female ninja) instead of how Sais actually work?

So when someone claims the TMNT of the Mirage Comics are legitimately bad-ass, I just shake my head in the same way I do when people try to say the same thing about Lobo.

Though with Lobo it's more headache inducing since the people writing him now have bought into the idea too...

Power Rangers is an unintentional parody (which is indeed a legitimate concept) in that it never had the resolve not to make light of itself and its source material. Some people might consider that simple levity, but then everything's a matter of perspective, isn't it? I've always viewed PR as a franchise that quickly realized it was only gaining popularity due to its absurdity, and, like the unpopular kid in school that will do anything for a laugh, began to take itself less and less seriously to the point that it bordered on comedy.

As far as the Mirage Turtles being a parody, I think that's generally a misconception propagated by people who have never actually read the comic. As has been pointed out, there are numerous allusions, references and direct lampooning of characters and themes used in the material that inspired the creators, but as far as crafting a genuine and unique storyline that never drew attention to the inherent lunacy of its concept, TMNT was very much a serious comic, and by "serious" in this sense I just mean that it was able to stand on its own qualities rather than relying on mockery and constant diversion to other works, which is the definition of a parody.

Also, Neko, I didn't realize you were a master of martial arts theory. Care to enlighten me as to how sai "actually work"?

Bottom line is I don't understand how something being lighthearted or farcical in nature precludes its potential for being legitimately badass. I realize that not a lot of realism or emotional impact went into creating the Turtles comics, but badass happenings are badass happenings, or am I wrong? Maybe I should be shaking my head at all those people who think Samuel L. Jackson's character from Pulp Fiction was actually cool...?

This sounds like something a virgin would say.

Yet another reason they reign supreme! The Turtles manged to get MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice up in their ****!

Did you only watch Turbo or the Disney seasons or something.

So, why doesn't this go for both franchises? Because you don't feel Power Rangers is badass enough?

No, I'm definitely sure fantasizing about how each Turtle had their way with Fran is worse.
