And speaking of wasted; the side-plot with a clergy who's important enough to have a secondary story in the film but not even important enough to MENTION HIS NAME seems only to serve as more confusing padding.

I agree their romance was a little boring, but one of their best scenes came at the end of the film when Philip is dying and he asks Serina to save him, and she pulls him underwater. Do you think she saved him? Or was she playing him the whole time and she just killed him?

Nah, she saved him. The movie's writing wasn't even close to deep enough for that kind of ambiguity.

Yeah, I remember hearing a reference in the movie that a kiss from a mermaid will save or something, and I think that's what happened.
