Parents being clean (Smoking and Alcoholism)

My dad drinks every time he's at a get-together with his friends. Both of my parents are chain smokers. Their smoking habit is one of the main reasons I moved out.

I never smoked and I've always despised that habit for as long as I can remember. There is a strict no-smoking rule in my house.

I drank beer (5 bottles) and whiskey (14 shots) during high school. This is when I found out that I have a high alcohol tolerance and an allergic reaction to alcoholic beverages (slightly pinkish/reddish skin, a feeling of warmness and mild itchiness).

My old man used to smoke two to three packs a day and drank occasionally. He was as healthy as a horse though and died from prostate cancer about five years ago. My mom didn't do either of them, probably because she simply couldn't afford it.

I smoke about half a pack to a pack a day but I rarely drink. I have an addictive personality so when going for a vice I wanted to go to the one that wouldn't get me inebriated.

I'm going to try and quit though. My daughters mother keeps telling her "see? you daddy's smoking his death sticks! he's gonna die a terrible death soon!"

In my 25 years, I have not met this kind of mother you are describing...must be an irish V american thing (Ladylike...that term still exists?..its another world).

My father drinks occasionally. Likes Baileys and he used to have quite a fondness for irish whiskey mixed with sugar and boiling water. Nothing out of the ordinary...although there were a few nights were he'd have a few, and then we'd spend the next few hours discussing Paul Simon. Smoking, he smoked regularly until about....10 years ago. He very occasionally is offered one by a customer and will take it, but the addiction aspect is long dead with him.

My mother's never been much of a drinker. Likes some wine every now and then, that's about it. She was a relatively heavy smoker until about 2 years ago when she quit.

Dad used to be a mild alcoholic, which caused a lot of complications for the family the better part of a decade ago and resentment and disciplinary issues for me in high school. He dropped it cold turkey after my mother threatened to leave him because of his behavior and told him how it was affecting his kids, then left him anyway because their marriage had become irreparably strained after years of arguing and spiteful neglect. I'm really proud of his decision to quit and was just as impressed when I found out he had kicked smoking instantly after my older brother was born. He's been substance-less to the present day.

Mom enjoys the occasional glass of wine and I have a sneaking suspicion she blazed in high school to be like Janice Joplin but overall she's one of the most discrete people I've ever known. It helps that she's a nurse and sees the damaging effects that drugs and alcohol have on people after prolonged use.

I've been unofficially Straight Edge ever since I was old enough to understand what the stuff can do to people and I've never been shaken by temptation or experimented with anything unless you count the time that I vowed to smoke a cigarette for every one that one of my friends smoked in an effort to get him to give it up (it worked). I've never actively and voluntarily sought the effects of inebriation out of choice and a standard of personal discipline. I'm glad I never got into the habit considering everyone I grew up with has since descended into addiction or at least dependency and it lets me keep my mind clear and sharp, which is good since there's already enough dissonance in there anyway. Does make parties boring, though.

My pops used to drink and smoke weed when I was....I believe 4 of 5yrs old. But after awhile, he felt like he was too old for all that and with 2 kids (and one on its way), he gave it up. Been going to church every since.

My mom only drinks wine coolers on special occasions.
