Bio: Like many Jaeger pilots, Vanya was just a child when K-Day fell. Being the son of rising politician Anatoli Volkov, however, he felt little impact from the event. The world had certainly changed, but it had no direct influence on him. It wasn't until the Jaeger program began and a Shatterdome was built in his hometown of Vladivostok that the reality of it all began to sink in. Vanya wasn't frightened, however, but excited by the prospect of it all. Piloting a giant robot seemed like an amazing thing to do and he wanted nothing more than to do it himself. As Vanya grew older and his father more influential, and thus less present in Vanya's life, he became colder and more cynical, but still held a great interest in the Jaegers.
When a Kaiju attacked the Sea of Okhotsk, the Volkov family moved to Moscow, partially to get away from the increasingly dangerous coast and partially to accommodate Anatoli's appointment to the Federal Assembly. Anatoli tried to use his new position and connections to keep his family safe...but Vanya preferred a more aggressive approach: he enrolled in the Jaeger Academy. This decision led to some tension between Vanya and his father that wouldn't be resolved for many years.
At the Academy, Vanya found himself forced to live up to a lot of double talk from his instructors and peers. They would chide his performance to his face, while simultaneously attributing his successes solely to his father's influence. Rather than let this demoralize him, Vanya took it as a challenge. Over the next few years, he would push himself harder than he thought possible, improving his scores until even the most staunch naysayer had to (quite reluctantly) acknowledge his talent. Unfortunately, this led to Vanya developing something of an ego and some unrealistic expectations of those around him. This led to problems when it came to Drift compatability: Vanya expected his partner to be perfect (or at least as perfect as they could be, seeing as they weren't him). One by one, Vanya would reject his classmates as potential co-pilots. Despite his low compatibility issues, the Academy was forced to acknowledge his otherwise exemplary scores and graduate him. Vanya was assigned to the new LA Shatterdome in hopes that he might find someone among the gang of misfits that passed as pilots that he could tolerate.
